scorp flies through mot, now its started making a 'droning' noise, normally when i take my foot of the gas and roll in gear above 20mph, sometimes makes a very similar noise when accelerating? had a quick look under bonnet, all hoses etc seem ok, oil level is fine too.

A whiny diff on overrun can last for years, more annoying than a portent of impending catastrophe. However if you've noticed it only recently, as Highlander says, check them thing rear wheel bearings , CV's, propshaft , Etc.

dunno if it means anything or is just coincidence but since the noise started the cars been difficult to start, this morning i had to pump diesel manually with the plunger on the filter before it'd start. for the first few seconds it 'hunts' for fuel then its fine, in fact its driving revving etc very well and smooth.....
