Over reving on change-up 2nd to 3rd

For about a week now, my 2.3 16v auto saloon has been over revving on many change-ups from 2nd to 3rd.

To be honest, most of the gear changes are so smooth I don't always know what gear I'm in, but I'm pretty sure it's only been happening in 2nd to 3rd change-ups.

It doesn't always happen, but happens in the same places on my drive into work and back each day. I think it basically happens when the change is while I'm still accelerating significantly and/or going uphill, but doesn't when the change is when I've finished accelerating up to speed in a built up area. It also doesn't happen if e.g. I drive at 40 and force a change down then back up by dropping the selector into 2 then back to D. (This is all driving in E mode).

Essentially, when it happens, at that particular change-up the revs jump up 500-750 rpm, then drop as 3rd engages. The actual change into 3rd is still very smooth - it doesn't 'thump' in or anything like that.

In all other respects it is very smooth; O/D engages and disengages as it should; there is a fairly faint rattling sound coming from somehwere under the hood when it sits idling in Park.

Looking at the transmission fluid today after my drive to work ... actually I can't really smell anything (but I do have a cold); no black bits (or bits of any kind); colour is - er - well, browny-red (or reddy-brown).

Any thoughts

Have you cleaned the Maf?

Even if you have, do it again.

Poor wires in this loom can cause various problems with changes:

Personally I’d change the fluid & filter in the box, but others may disagree.

No, I haven't. But I managed to dodge out from work long enough to buy a can of carb cleaner this afternoon, so I'll try that tomorrow.

You think the MAF could cause this symptom?

If it comes to that, I'll have to get that done at a garage. I don't have any off-road space, and can only do whatever work I can parked by the pavement in a busy village high street.  Sad

Thanks for the reply - here's hoping it's the MAF and I can get it off without trouble.

(If there's a serious autobox problem, I need to find out fairly promptly as the garage I got the car from - unfortunately over 20 miles away - did give me a 3 month warranty on the box and engine. Mind you, I have a feeling they won't be easy about it if I need to claim ...)

Yes, could just be the MAF.

Hi David don't touch it! if you have a 3 month warranty! then don't give them another
excuse to try an get out of the claim by disturbing anything, give them a call first play dumb, an don't tell them you've cleaned the maf or anything.
worth a try, you never know you may be lucky.

Well, the story so far ...

As having it fixed by the garage I bought it from could be very inconvenient, I thought I'd try cleaning the MAF first in case that was it.

Didn't make any difference. (Mind you, the right hand wire - with the Wires at the top as you look at it - stayed a dark mettalic grey no matter how much carb cleaner I sprayed on it).

Thought I'd like to know as much as I could before tackling the garage in case they're not cooperative or try to pull a fast one, so I tried to get an opinion locally.

Went to the local garage. The fellow blanched at the mention of a Scorpio and told me to try the Ford dealer in Ringwood, and that they were always very helpful.

So I phoned the Ford dealer in Ringwood. As I got the word 'Scorpio' out, he interrupted with: 'Oh no - I can't help with Scorpios. I never uderstood them at all.'  Undecided After I managed to explain that it was a problem with the autobox, he said he didn't touch those anyway, Scorpio or not, and said to try an auto transmission specialist.

Called one in Southampton fished out of the Yellow Pages. Interestingly, he wanted to know if I had a problem with Reverse as apparently it uses the same gear as 3rd. As I don't, he says it's just a sticking servo on 3rd which'll be due to the seal having gone solid (or something like that). Gave me an estimate of 150-180+VAT.

Have now called the garage I got it from. Fellow there seems to be being cooperative, and is checking to find whether the transmission guy they use would be significantly cheaper than the estimate I got from the Southampton firm (as I work close to Southampton, that firm could pick up the car from work, fix it and deliver it back while I'm at work). If it isn't, he said they'd pay for the Sputhampton firm to do it.

Anyway, it doesn't look too serious (not a rebuild/replace case) and should be sorted out. I'm just hoping they'll pay for the Southampton firm to do it as I don't have any alternative transport, and would have to spend a whole day off mooching round Poole if they do it locally.
