Won't  Start

As Capt. Blackadder said:
" I think it rhymes with Clucking Bell "

Well it had to happen one day.   Cry

Went out to-day and  my 2.0 16v  wouldn't  fire, starter turns OK. but no go.

Everything else is fine, all electrics in working order.

No previous problems encountered on Tuesday when last used.

I've checked all the Fuses and connections, Fuseboxes bone dry.

 I'm suspecting fuel problems.

How can I test  that the fuel tank pump is working and that fuel is reaching the fuel rail ?

And anyother obvious stuff  I've overlooked ?

BTW, the battery hasn't been disconnected for months.

Can you hear the fuel pump relay when you turn the ignition on? Should sort of whine for a second or two then stop.

i'd try.....

1. different key (red master if poss). have a look at the PATS light.

2. jump start. we've had a couple of cold mornings.

before taking anything apart.

As Andrew says try a jump start. These cars require a good battery to start them even though there may be enough energy to turn them over. Do the dials,ie: speedo and rev counter fly round when you try and start the car?. If so it is the battery at fault.

No  the needles are fine, I've taken out  R17, tested it as  best  I could, seems OK.

After heavy rain the PATS light tends to stay on, so water is getting in although not in the area where the  PATS unit is.

Are  there any sensitive electronics that wouldn't like water  above  the   pedals   area ?

   I'll investigate further to-morrow.

An OBD  would be handy, but I doubt my local FMD would have the proper   stuff

I'm  getting  too  old  and  lazy  to   embark  on  a   protracted  and costly  fault-finding,   cat  and  mouse  elimination  game  with  this  old  bird.

If  she  can't  be  fixed  in a  quick  and  reasonably   cheap way  it's  the  Glue Factory  I'm  afraid. Shocked

There is a large connector fitted on the offside inner wing below the power steering reservoir, shown HERE as C110. It is in two sections and the top is bolted on. Try cleaning this as often fluid will contaminate it and cause problems.

If you do go your FMD don't get talked into replacing the idle control valve. That was their first move when mine did the same thing.
Turned out to be the wiring to the EDIS unit. I would try moving each of the wires individually  (there are 11).
My culprit was the black and white wire which controls the voltage to the fuel pump.

Good Luck - I know the feeling

Petrol? Wink

You can disconnect the fuel pipes just below the inlet manifold and check for fuel

I'm coming round to the battery theory, as the car hasn't  been started since  Sunday with a few frosty nights in between. Even though the battery is only 15 months old !

I'll give it a  jump  start  with the  American  beast as soon as that old biddy downstairs shifts her Clio

 Success!! Grin

The jump start did the trick.

However, now the direction indicators and the wiper washer pump don't work !

The relevant fuses are OK  so I'm guessing it's them  relays.

Strange  how  I didn't  get the  usual  "flickering dash needles"  to  indicate
    a   failing   battery  voltage .

What Stuart is saying is that you have probably not got the multiplug back on correctly. The saying is " If it goes on first time it aint right". You need to ensure that the unit is properly located in the two lugs before pressing it home and securing it. It will go down one row out and produce the type of fault you refer to.

Yes,  good thought  Highlander, I  did  disturb  that  plug  yesterday.

 I'll  try  it again  tomorrow.

Now I have to navigate my way to  nightshift   sans  functional    indicators.

Should be fun, see how others  like it when   I  DON'T  bluddae  indicate  !!!! Roll Eyes

Yes indeed, as many of you predicted  ( well done, pour yourself a large drink ) the multi-plug  was  not  fitted  correctly. Only half of the connections were connected leading to half the electrics being  inoperative.

All is well now at Floppy Manor.   I'll  keep the eye on the battery, it may have a slight drain  problem .

Thanks to all.
