Possible MAF problem (solved!)

Hello, Today I noticed that the car (2.0 16v manual) wouldn't go below 2500-3500rpm no matter if it was idling or cruising. I checked the throttle body and it sits at idle position touching the stop screw, neither the throttle wire or the cruise control wire have any tension in them. I tried disconnecting the MAF and immediately the idle dropped to 500-900rpm, however it hunts somewhat. When I reconnect the MAF, it shoots up to 2500-3000rpm again. I haven't tried cleaning the MAF (yet), that would be a job for tomorrow, but am I right in thinking that the problem is either a dirty or borked MAF? The car is driveable with the MAF disconnected, but is prone to stalling when I hold the clutch.

That an odd one. Have you had a look at the idle control valve? Is your fuel tank nearly empty? That can cause a high idle, shouldn't be that high though of course!

I did try disconnecting the IACV, and that did absolutely nothing. Fuel tank is about half full

Problem solved! I tried cleaning the MAF (emptied half a can of brake cleaning into it) without any effect at all. I then tried giving the IACV the same treatment and giving it a couple of drops of oil on the shaft afterwards. Now it sits perfectly at 800rpm and purrs like a kitten. One question though: should the IACV close completely when disconnected? Mine stops at approx. 1mm from full close. I can push it closed but when released, it opens slightly.

| Don't know if it's supposed to be like that, but mine is the same (I'd guess at more than 1mm, but not looked recently).

| Mine is the same as well & I have a slightly missing idle in neutral, but put it in D or R & the idle is fine
