Mileometer Reset

Have just bought a 1987 2.3 Ultima to replace the 2.9 12 valve I unfortunately wrote off, and on filling up with petrol and resetting the mile ometer, for some reason I got distracted and kept the reset button on hold for 10 – 12 seconds or so. To my surprise a series of 8’s I think it was appeared in the read out, then every time I pressed the button again a different set of figures appeared until finally zero came up. Has anyone had a similar experience and know what the readouts mean. Ian Wallace

Except the instrument "type" seems to be programmed in the ecu. not the cluster itself. My Rev counter on my 24v reads 50% high because it shows as type 3. Three clusters later from 24v Ultimas hasn't fixed the problem. Pulses show at 40, exactly what they should. An interesting side effect when changing clusters though is the mileage is held within the cluster, not the ecu. I have clusters with 87k, 101k, 112k and 127k on them - wonder which one will stay?
