heater matrix-2.9 ultima P reg

Hi all, newbie here. Love Scorpio's, but my heating matrix has packed up, steam came thru vents, so I had a mechanic look at it, needs new matrix and rehoused the pipe.  Now losing water all the time, anyone know why and is it worth the cost and effort to replace heater matrix I am aware about removing the whole dash/facia(seen on the website, that looks very ugly!) bearing in mind the car runs lovely and only paid £850 for a P Reg. I cannot do any mechanical work, so can anyone recommend someone.  I live in Essex/London area.  Many thanks Sad Sad

As a short term fix you can join the two rubber heater matrix hoses together inside the engine bay with a piece of pipe or hose, this will get you back on the road but you will have no heat Smiley

its quite a big job so a garage would be expensive

Highlander, good idea.  This has got me thinking!  Would it be possible to fit a new Heater Matrix in situ under the bonnet and bypass the old unit all together as you said. This would avoid alot of time of removing the old one.
Has anyone tried doing this before!

A new heater matrix is around £30 I think, garage labour could be £300+ but I think you CAN replace the matrix without removing the dash by cutting part of the plastic heater box away on the drivers side close to the brake pedal - somewhere on this site I think I have read about this. Not a nice job to do - the heater on my old Granada Scorpio was blocked and last winter was absolute hell - traded it in when the weather warmed up in the spring  Grin

Not quite sure what you mean by the above....

If you mean can you simply put a replacement heater matrix under the bonnet - then yes you can, but it would serve no purpose. The replacement matrix has to go exactly where the faulty one went - in the air flow to the cabin, or you will not get any warm air to heat the cabin.

Thanks all, for some advise, I won't replace the matrix. But the mechanic rehoused the pipe so the water can run around the engine, but every two days I have to top up with water, is there a leak somewhere that I am to dumb to know?

Sounds like it, check the radiator for leaks, along the bottom edge and down the sides are favorites.
Check all the rubber hoses too and just hope its not a head gasket..
