It wont stop

It Seams things lurch from 1 problem to another, the weather has been the biggest inhibitor to cold or too wet.

Finally got round to having a look into the long list of problems i have to work through to get it back on the road. I started with the Battery drain, something is sucking the life out of the battery. I had been reading lots of threads on here about it, an some helpful suggestions from other owners so had some things to try.

But things took a turn for the weird. I had to jump it to get it started which was to be expected as the battery had been disconnected and left sat for some time. got it running, a lil ropey but running then i could see smoke coming from the open bonnet, i quickly turned it off and pulled the keys out and to my horror the dam thing was still running no word of a lie the keys were in my hand and the engine was running Huh

I disconnected the battery and it stopped (obviously) the smoke smells like exhaust fumes coming from the back of the engine, so my question is what what cause the car to still be running after i take the keys out and would it be linked to the battery drain?

Any thought ideas or suggestions appreciated

ignition switch or wet fusebox:-/

Either could be causing a battery drain

Have you got a battery cover fitted, is there any sign of water in the passenger footwell below the glovebox?. Most likely cause is water in the fusebox as Stuart says.

Lee A from the unleashed site has recently had the problem of engine running when the keys were out.As expected it was the fuse box gone south.Quite shocking really as the car has barley covered 50,000 miles !

The fuse box repair is NOT that bad . The problem is getting them out of the car . Once out it appears to be quite straight forward.

I would like to think its not the fuses boxes as they were replaced with new ones not to long ago. i couldn't say that the rain cover has been on religiously but more often than not and the passenger foot well and glove box are dry.

Its an N Reg 2.9 v6 12 valve saloon ultima as for the loom and everything else electrical it has been all be replaced in the last couple of years, it leaves me Huh

It feels like its about to turn off as i turn back the key but then fires back up as i get to the off position it makes me think the fault lies with the ignition switch, but as always time and weather wait for no man so i will have to strip the column at the next earliest window of opportunity.

If you whip the bit of underdash trim off near your right knee(if it's RHD)thats the bit with the little storage box,you will see a large black multiplug clipped to the metal cross shelf, this is the termination of the ignition switch cable.Seperating that should indicate whether or not the switch is at fault.
         Good luck GOZZ

It only takes the one time left off in the rain to do the damage....
