Speedo not working..........

Hi ya`ll
I wonder if anyone has had something like this.
Just recently my auxillary drive belt started slipping, my wife said that the steering went really heavy and the clocks and gauges went crazy! anyway I replaced the old brittle belt, and now everything is working fine........ except the speedometer, it is at the all the way round position, and is resting on the bottom of the casing, I know it`s not actually stuck against the casing, because
when the car was switched off, the needle came off the bottom of the casing a bit. If I need a new part can anyone advise of the best and cheapest way to tackle?
and do I need just another speedo or will I have to replace the whole cluster, also someone is seling a cluster on ebay, but the rev counter and speedo are stuck in about the midway positions......... is this normal?  Thanks for your time

Try an insrument reset:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/instreset.htm

"press the odometer reset button for about 5 seconds, while the engine is running. This puts the instrument panel into self-diagnostic mode during which all the bulbs in the displays light up and the needles rise and fall. "

Next time you turn on the ignition hopefully the needle will return (you're in effect teaching it where zero is).

Or a wee tap on the top of the dash might release it, failing that you can remove the dash and the clear plastic from the front of the clocks and move it by hand

If, as Highlander has assumed, the needle has come to rest at the wrong side of the pin...

The actual pin or peg seems to be made from some soft flexible plastic, so given enough pressure to from the needle to move it out of the way, it will bend. Having suffered this problem the easy solution is simply give the top of the dash a thump whilst you are driving along the road. The faster you drive, the harder the needle will be pushing against the peg in its attempts to go clockwise.

I had the same thing on mine, I fixed it by hitting the top of the dash hard while doing a decent speed on the motorway. I found that as you got past about 80mph and the needle is towards the right hand side of the dial it will release it self when the top of the dash is thumped very firmly, took two good whacks to release mine.

Should sort it out for you. Good luck.

If all goes according to plan, I should be joining the ranks of Scorpio ownership shortly. It's nice to know that the complicated electrics on these cars respond to the good old school of mechanics philosophy 'if all else fails, give it a whack with something large and heavy'   Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Wink

Thanks for all the help, I decided that the best way for me, was to make a very small drill hole in the clear plastic, to the right of the rest pin. I then used a paperclip, bent slightly at the tip, and inserted it just under the speedo hand, I then carefully lifted and levered the hand over the pin..... I was surprised at just how stiff the pin was! I then did a reset, and now everything is hunky dory again.  Wink
    Thanks everyone once again.

Martin, The hand was constrained between the pin and bottom of the speedometer!
