hi all, i had a new battery fitted 2 months ago on my 2 litre ultima as the old one died on me, and after a week the new battery died too so i returned to the garage that fitted the new battery and they replaced it under guarentee, but this week the 2nd new battery has also died on me . i only do 4 miles a day in the car, could the problem be because im using lights heater etc... i will take battery back to the garage tomorrow to be checked/replaced for the third time....?. thanks.

hi there 4 miles isn't a lot, but the car should cope with it. check the voltage ouput when the engine is running with lights, etc on, then off. use the dash reset (hold in the trip button for 10secs, then scroll to BATT) if you don't have a meter. hth

Might be worth getting the alternator checked too, does the battery light come on when you put the ignition on?

have you noticed the battery light when starting? if the battery light doesn't come on when starting it points to the alternator, failing that, does the engine turn slower when starting as time goes by, or is it a sudden power loss / battery failure?

had my car nearly 2 years, i do on average 12MLS PER MONTH. car allways fires up with no problems. so would suggest you have a charging problem or your supplier has a dodgy batch of batteries.

If you only do 4 miles a day & the battery is going dead in a week, then the alternator must be almost dead Using lights, heater etc without the alternator returning a charge will kill even the most powerful of batteries within hours & I'm surprised the garage that supplied the battery didn't test the alternator output.....it's the most obvious thing to look at

If you can - take it to Halfords. Say you think the battery's dead. They'll check both battery & alternator for you.

These cars do need a large amount of power to start them. Have a read of THIS page] and check out the specification.Smaller/cheaper units may turn the car over BUT not have enough power to actually start the car.

You can check the battery standing voltage by turning on the ignition and holding the trip button in until all the 8s appear, then press intermittently till Batt appears with the reading, then start the engine and do the same again to see the running voltage reading. This is a basic quick check without a meter.

| Well that explains a lot , I had dancing needles and my battery didnt seem to so much as click the starter until it had been left a while. The link shows a 71ah battery with a 650 cold crank capacity, my 2.9 has a 40ah battery with a 320 cold crank capacity!

Just as an aside, a 75ah batt shouldn't cost more than £55. Mine was from Patco about a month ago.
