Well, after a quiet time I needed to use the diesel for a work trip on Wednesday...
I went to the shops after work on Tuesday night and everything was fine on the way there.
When I started the car up to come home I noticed the rev counter wasn't working. Also, it sounds much louder when you give it any gas, pulls the same as ever it's just a different sound (Tractor! Tractor! Tractor! etc). Are these two things related?
After speaking to a few people I left it parked up and used the 24v for work (that doesn't run on veg oil and doesn't have the same fuel consumption  What? You don't think I drive a diseasel for fun do you?  )
Anyone come across this before?

The two are almost certainly related. I would check the crank sensor (back of engine, near flywheel) is connected fine as this provides the signal to the rev counter and is used by the engine management to adjust injection timing. The tractor noise is because the timing is wrong (likely too advanced). Because this is controlled by the engine management system, you'll also need to check that it is gettting power (see if the EGR valve is operating), and the needle lift sensor fitted to one of the injectors.
I'm guessing your diesel is the early 115PS type (fitted up to early '96)?

Thanks Darren.
I went out on Sunday to resolve this, armed with a few plausible suggestions as to what might be wrong...
It's a Scorpio so...
It ran like a dream (well, a diesel dream) 
I'll remember your input for "next time" - bloody scorpios hey
