Angry

really am getting sick of these cars, no wonder ford have the nickname 'dagenham dustbin', the build quality is sooooo poor.

right, the other month i had the offside rear wheel bearings done (again), now its making a horrendous noise from what seems to be the front nearside but only when the steering is engaged. it doesnt do it all the time, there is no noticeable difference in the drive or steering, it sounds like a spring being wound up too tight then 'bang' as it lets go, you can also feel it through the car. i've raised the car and checked the wheels for freeplay (i.e. bearings) and they're fine. i also visually checked the coil for breakage (as ford make them from an alien form of alloy that isnt strong enough to  be used on a tonka toy and therefore snap as easily as a rich tea biscuit) but it looks fine. the steering rack was brand new 18 months ago, anyone got any ideas? before i sling the piece of s**t off beachy head and make a dubious insurance claim..........hold on, beachy head? thats 60 or more miles away......it'll never make that.

Have you checked that the wishbone balljoint & track rod end are swiveling smoothly ?....could be that a rubber boot has split & the ball joint may be seizing  Undecided....... Smiley

is it just at low speed? if so, i would suspect the abs kicking in. my flatmates saxo does exactly this, at low speed, when steering not straight. he spent LOTS trying to get it fixed, new hub etc etc, but nothing worked, he just lives with it. check abs sensors?

ps, if the nearside is going Pttangg, the theory is the offside sensor is kaput (ie registering zero, so nearside brake is applied), usually due to sensor being worn, and gap too big when steering under stress, if that makes sense.

From your description. it sounds as if it could be a broken coil spring on the front suspension. They often break (when they do break), close to an end and it can be quite difficult to spot that they have broken.

thats what it sounds like harry, but thinking about it, it would only happen the once, then the loose spring would rattle over any bump (as did the offside one when that was broken  Roll Eyes)

his doesnt, seems like a common problem on tinternet, no abs light but abs engaging. im not saying yours is this, but its worth checking if yours does it under light braking at low speeds, especially if during steering. its likely gap between sensor and "receiver" is extending, so signal lost and abs kicks in. signal is weakest at low speeds.

ps he didnt have this problem until garage did both driveshafts, then had to have bearing, hub flange, hub, ball joints, nothing cured it so he gave up. i suggested they should be looking on the opposite side, but they ignored me  Wink my theory is dirt between hub and flange.

some more clues on this one;.............

had to go shopping today so thought i'd try the car, only seems to do it at low speed but does it when im not using the brake, it will do it in either direction the wheel is turned but, interestingly, after it goes ppppttttttang, whatever direction im turning the wheel the car will pull in that direction.... Huh

...."whatever direction im turning the wheel the car will pull in that direction....  "

Do you mean the steering stays in that position & doesn't centralise when coming out of the turn ?

If so, as Andrew suggested, it could be the bearing ring seized at the top of the strut  Undecided

Did you notice a creaking or stiffness when turning the steering wheel recently, before this problem happened ?....also a knocking from this area ?

Maybe the rubber strut mount is caput as well as the bearing ring ?  Undecided
