After putting up with this problem for about three months, going through a complete set of leads (£100), various other leads and renewing other vacuum tubes, I've found the problem. Simple, I took off the air flow meter, sprayed it with carb cleaner getting the spray into all the nooks and crannies especially the centre with the two elements in making sure that that the centre is pristine. Incedentley DO NOT use anything other than the spray. Putting a screwdriver in there will wreck it. Now it doesent miss even whih hard acceration right through the range.

yep, its known as cleaning the MAF (mass air flow meter), it measures the air flow by keeping a 200 degree temp in the wire(s), i.e. how much current is needed to keep the temp in the wires at exactly 200 as air flow increases. this info is then used to determine fuelling, gearing etc. it is very accurate until after a period of time pollen burns onto the wires which lead to a false reading, unfortunately ford did not include MAF cleaning in any service intervals.
