diesel exhaust manifold problems

I bought a scorpio today it's my third scorpio but it's a diesel and i know nothing about diesels and i was wondering if there was anyone out there who could help me with a problem i have with the exhaust manifold. The guy I bought it from said he couldn't start it one day because the battery was flat so he towed it in gear and made it start but after it started he found that it was smoking from the manifold at least that's what it looks like bwcause it has a heat shield over it but i was wondering before i start to pull it to bits this weekend could someone tell me what i should be looking for and what kind of damage the previous owner could have done and any new parts that i might need thanx

You'll probably find the Manifold cracked at the worst but it may be just a gasket leaking etc....
