I always thought white smoke was auto transmission fluid being sucked into the engine and burnt

As far as I know there is no way auto fluid can get into the combustion chambers - unless the radiator fails the the head gasket fails resulting in a mix of coolant and auto fluid getting burnt. So either way, it pointas to a head gasket failiure.

There is if it is a 12v the valve on the vacum side of the 12v's gear box can fail and suck ATF into the intake

| Yeah - right on Snoopy, that's what I meant. The vacuum diaphram can 'pinhole' and ATF get sucked up into the engine intake. Apparently doesn't take too long to empty the 'box and cause terminal damage. Happened to me on a Mk2 Granada 2.8 Ghia - thankfully got it sorted before anything serious happened.

i had an episode with white smoke, and juddering power. smoked more the hotter it got. garage wrote it off as head gasket. turns out it was a spark plug breaking down (new one as well!). one new spark plug cured it. best check all sparks/leads. hope this helps,
