I need a good autobox garage

I've just joined the site and have had my Scorpio Cosworth since late summer. The autobox had a complete overhaul in 2006, costing £1400, but I knew there were problems from the start. Cattlegrid and a fluctuating speedo seemed to say the VSS so when it finally stopped engaging the upper gears I had that replaced at my local garage, to no effect.

I found a garage who said another overhaul was required, but after 8 weeks of waiting and a multitude of excuses it came back to me in the same condition. Well not quite, it worked for 3 days but slowly tailed off to no upper gears again. We had agreed no charge (at least after threatening Trading Standards) but now I'm stuck to locate another garage. It was only after examining old receipts that I discovered it was the same garage who performed the earlier overhaul!

I'm in the Midlands area but please don't suggest a Coventry garage starting with B with 3 letters.

I'm really loathe to abandon the car, I've fallen in love with as most of you on here obviously have but where can I find someone who will do the work?

Hoping for a quick reply, you cant go far on two gearsSmiley

hi there

you might be better off getting a fully built 'box sent to you (not sure of costs, though) and fitted locally.

i've used this company before for a fluid change. they've been around for years and all the local garages and main dealers use them.

Well thanks for your help guys but no one even wants to touch a scorpio auto box in my area. I'm told that faults are a common problem  and very difficult to rectify. Have I been wooed by all the wonderful comments on this site? I love the car but I'm told the best thing I can do is send it to the knackers yard. My wife will kill me if I buy another with the same problems and yet all you guys all seem so happy

Hi. Don't despair, some of us have been there Smiley

You could argue that the Ford autobox is rubbish and the weakest part of the car but some of the guys would disagree with this I know. Like whoever spent £1400 on the new box before you I did the same, spent £1450 to have it done by the main Ford dealer and d**n did I feel mugged when my 'new' box started acting up just as the warranty expired, worst money I ever spent Undecided

Nobody wants to touch them it's true, I couldn't get anyone to even look at mine, nearest place who would was 80 miles away in Sudbury, Suffolk, wouldn't have chanced the car that far the way it was acting up. Couldn't have given the car away to a dealer either, had all the 'nah, they're rubbish, we don't touch 'em' just like you did. But I liked the car, why scrap the d**n thing?

Problem is the quality of rebuild you get for your money, mine started failing in 3k of gentle driving with the same symptoms as the old one but then the original box must have lasted 80k plus, a full premium rebuild should surely give it a decent lifespan Huh. You pay for a rebuild but get a warmed over box from a scrapper, they see it's an old car and to them it's not got much life left so they just chuck in a dud part and rake in the cash..

You can take a chance with a 2nd hand box from eBay or somewhere and just pay a garage to fit it, or if you really like the car then search around for somebody who will do a proper rebuild, maybe sorting the problems wouldn't even mean a full rebuild for a guy who knew his stuff..

Could even be a wiring issue with the other faults you describe, ever considered that possibility?

Regards, Bruce.

I would avoid general garages and look up autobox specialists.  The auto in the Scorpio is a development of those in the earlier Granadas and Sierras so is well known, but the fully electronic control may be what is putting people off.  Speaking of which, it may not be a mechanical fault with the gearbox but control related - have you had an OBD-II scan done to see if there's any fault codes stored?  If there are then these are your priority to fix as the engine management system may be the cause of your trouble rather than the actual geartrains and servos inside the 'box.
