Alarm keeps going off!

Well, after six months or so sat idle whilst I repeatedly tried to sell the unreliable dog of a Mondeo that was to "replace" it, my '98 2.3 Ghia X Scorpio is back in action. During this time it was left on a drive way with the battery connected, which obviously kept running down (yes, yes, I know!!) but after a jump start it's back in action again. As an aside, I'm really enjoying driving it again and am looking forward to adding to the 140,000 miles that it's already done, provided the wheelarch rust hasn't spread too far and it doesn't fail the MOT too disastrously on Friday ( I have a nasty suspicion the fuel tank has developed a slight leak, so I 'm a bit concerned! ) Now, it's got back into action perfectly except for one thing - when i lock it up after using it, the d**n alarm keeps going off. It does this three times in the space of between 20 and 40 minutes, then remains silent. It's going in for a service and MOT on Friday and I'll get them to have a look at it but, in the meantime, is there anything I can check or anything I can do to temporarily shut it up, like pulling out a fuse? I live in a quiet country village, so the alarm is rather noticeable and a bit embarrassing but, equally, the car is extremely unlikely to get stolen if it's not switched on. Thanks in advance for any advice! Adam.

Check the bonnnet alarm switch they are prone to this fault.. try disconneting it and see what happens or clean it , or disconnect the alarm horn which is located behind the battery.

Hi Adam. Yes, I used to get this, would lock it and 30 seconds later the alarm would start sounding. As Snoopy says, bonnet switch is a likely culprit...otherwise IIRC there's also a microswitch in each door lock mechanism which will set the alarm off if it doesn't engage properly. Bonnet switch is easy to get at to clean, a good spray of WD40 into the door mechanism and a good slam of the doors a few times should help too. Hope this helps. Regards, Bruce.

Thanks for the tips, guys - I'll have a poke round the door and bonnet sensors tonight and, if all else fails, disconnect the alarm horn for the time being. The door slamming bit sounds like fun - wonder if the neighbours will appreciate that more or less than the alarm going off!

Mine did this, turned out to be the boot button sticking in. Pulled it out and sprayed loads of DW40 in it and it cured the problem

Aye, Barrie has a good point about the boot latch, that might've been part of the problem with mine. Nothing like a good excuse for a boot slamming session Regards, Bruce

another thing it might be,cos mine does it,as the weather is hot most people have all the fascia vents open,if you have the internal motion sensors a slight movement of fluctuating air is all that,s needed to set off the alarm,so close all your vents when you double lock it. its worked on mine and my mates jag ,a mondeo , an avensis etc etc!

As Bruce says the door locks can be a problem particularly if they are not used very often ie: rear dooron May 12th, 2008, 1:23pm, TiberiuS wrote:...otherwise IIRC there's also a microswitch in each door lock mechanism which will set the alarm off if it doesn't engage properly. Guys, Just to update you, I checked out the bonnet sensor last night and cleaned its contacts, then went round all the doors with the WD40 to give them the 'spray and slam' treatment (very therapeutic ) And the result - blissful silence all night! Thanks once again to all for the advice.
