Petrol smell

Car is a 2.3 Ultima, which runs well, but recently on starting there is a distinct smell of petrol in the car, which disapears on driving. |There does seem to be a loss in mpg. Have looked for any signs of leak but none found. Any clues would be appreciated. Robin

Have you checked the sender unit where it fits in the top of the tank?.

Hi Robin. You're running rich mate, lots of unburned fuel at cold start will put a smell into the cab easily. Another possibility is the evap system venting tank pressure, IIRC the outlet is under the car. This again would get into the cab through the vents. If you've got an MPG prob you need some OBD data, coolant temp sensor on the inlet manifold would be a good place to start, if you're handy with a multimeter you can check it and the wiring loom for shorts. Hope this helps. Regards, Bruce.

I have replaced the wiring loom 6mths ago. Ok with mechanical problems, can do them all myself (just renewed the heater matrix with the dash taken fully out) and the petrol smell was before this so not related, but not so good with electrical. Local Ford beyond my cash limits - will try to find someone in Nth London or Hertfordshire to take a look.

Hi Robin. Knowing some basic electrics will go a long way with these cars, but you don't need a detailed knowledge of them. A basic £5 multimeter would be invaluable to check for blown fuses and bad earths. If you've replaced the loom then great, you could still do with checking the connections fo the 2 coolant temp senders on the inlet manifold though. Or, save all that hassle, if you've got a laptop then get yourself an OBD reader for around £80. Take some readings and one of the guys on here will be able to guide you from there. If you can do the mechanics then you've won half the battle already Regards, Bruce.

Hi, my Cossie had same symptoms once because of a bad Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator. It is a liitle valve in front of the engine controlling fuel pressure and the return fuel flow. Does teh 2.3 have a fuel rail? If so, worth checking. Check this website for articles on the subject: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuelrail.htm Ray

My "Petrol Smell" turned out to be a leaking tank. It took some months to get from just a smell to a detectable leak.

Robin.M Thank's for all your replies - unfortunately I have been unwell for a spell since my origional post, but now nearly back to normal and will check the fuel rail regulator first. Since starting to drive again I notice that from sitting in idle i.e waiting at a roundabout, on pulling away the car is reluctant to pull as the engine seems not to pick up straight away and after a few seconds it's back to normal. May be the autobox but makes those instant decisions to go on a roundabout slightly hairy. May all be interconnected with the fuel rail regulator. Thanks again
