engine a Blaze !

howdy folks, I've been getting real busy with Naval life in Plymouth for a while now. my Morm has been enjoying my car. she treated me to a new steering rack when it needed replacing ( what a lovely Lady )
any way, I got home this wkend , took my car out as one would did a few miles 10-15. pulled up at a friends  when I noticed smoke coming from the bonnet (off side) I opened the bonnet and there was real orange flames coming from behind the drivers H lamp next to the engine !
I ran to my friends , got some water to put out the fire no worries but the smell of burning rubber is still on my mind.
I got home fine as I live quite close, 3 miles. the smell is a little presant still but the engine has had a chance to cool. the only other thing I can think of is the windscreen wipers were on intermitant , (electrical fault)
opinions and suggestions welcome please.
I need a good look in daylight tomorra although I gotta travel back down south sun and My Morm needs her for Monday morning. . .

Real flames & the smell of burning rubber eh........possibly the alternator or P/S pump bearings are getting a little stiff & about to seize, causing the rubber drive belt to slip & get real hot ?  Undecided

I had that on an old pinto engine - turned out I'd spilt oil on the exhaust manifold and it'd got hot enough to ignite during a blast down the A1.  Of course, the rubber and plastic components nearby didn't survive but the engine ran fine again once they had been replaced.

cheers gents. on a further check with my Pop today , we found NO evidence of a fire at all . . . My unkle suggested one of the plastic gromets that holds on the sound insulation to the top of the bonnet could have dropped on th the walm engine. so I'm off for further testing armed with a large bottle of water !
