Traction Control

Twice now the Traction Control Disabled warning light has come on whilst driving and pressing the T/C switch does nothing.  If I stop and switch the ignition off/on then the T/C light goes off after its check and stayfs off as it should - the T/C switch will then switch it on or off as it should.

Any thoughts anyone?

I also note that when I start the car after its done its checks and that the warning lights have gone out - both the ABS and T/C lights come on very briefly as the engine is starting but go out as soon as it catches.

Low battery a possibility??

hi john

it sounds like one of the rear abs sensors are playing up. Undecided

is the system activating? ie pushing the gas pedal back up?

Hi Andrew

No the system isn't activating, nothing happens other than the TC light comes on steady.  No ABS warning either so I don't think it's a ABS sensor.

Has only happened twice in a number of drives - both times on the Perth/Edinburgh run after around 45 mins - but resets as soon as I stop and switch off/on, the handbook says that this indicates a TCS fault and ........ see a Ford Dealer (what else) but if its intermittent then it'll be impossible to find.  I don't know whether TCS faults are logged somewhere??

hi john

yes, the codes get stored, but you need an iso lead to get them.

you could check the multi plug to the t/c module behind the n/s headlight. maybe a bit of corrosion?

still think a sensor error, though.

I occasionally see this very briefly & feint with the ABS (don’t have T/C), but never caused a problem.
By far the easiest is to get the codes read, but cleaning the rear sensors as Andrew says is easy & worth doing.

Try jacking up the car and checking both the rear wheel bearings. Rear wheel bearing failure can produce TCS problems as the sensor is no longer held in a stable position.

Had this once or twice and cleared it by simply doing a reset? by turning the key 3 times till chime heard then turn it off chime again and it is cleared.  hope that makes sense.

The TCS is passing the startup check and then fails in operation. If it was a sensor then the ABS light would also come on. The system checks the TCS potentiometer and motor at startup and this is passing, however a bad connection might cause the problem when running. There is a multiplug that connects to the motor/potentiometer but the problem is most likely to be internal to the unit. I agree with others who have said get the codes read as they will be stored in the history.

Thanks guys.

I'll look at the multiplug first and then see how it goes.  Didn't come on on last trips to/from Edinburgh.

Did you ever solve this problem? Mine is doing exactly the same. Was doing it last night and tonight on the way back from work but was OK on the journey in this morning. Weird

Yes problem went away.  I cleaned the multplug and haven't had any probs since BUT I also had to replace the battery shortly afterwards so I think it was a low supply voltage resulting in it failing the check from time to time.
