Hi everbody, I'm a new member of this forum and the proud new owner of a 2.3i 24v ghia (1997 on a P).
Now then! HELP! Embarassed
After starting engine misfires and splutters like mad after 2500 rpm sometimes can be over 3000 rpm. Only just started doing this last couple of days, before that it was ok but hesitant on deceleration. Man from kwik fit - whos dad has a 2.9 - checked the computer and said eletrics ok but might be sparkplug breaking down under load. Cannot change plugs as screwheads knurled over coils other plugs ok though.
Have read through problem page on this site and quite honestly I don't understand a blinking word of it!!
Can  anyone explain - in laymans terms - what might be goining onHuh Huh

Hi & welcome
I assume it’s a 2.3 16v (not 24v)
It could be the plugs since they may not have been touched for ages if the coils couldn’t be removed, although this is fairly typical of the coils breaking down.
There doesn’t seem much point in trying to diagnose your problem until you look at the plugs, you need to get those coils off.

Thanks Dave.
Yes it is a 16v sorry.

I agree that it is probably the coils because I had another car a long time ago that had similar symptoms. It's just that I was told by your man at Kwik Fit that this would show up on the OBDCHuh
Anyway in the abscence of dynamite. How do you suggest I get those coils off, and will I need a second mortgage to get some replacements?

I don’t think anything would show up in OBD.
Ford coil packs are dear, there are cheaper ones about but I don’t know how good they are, there are usually some on eBay.

I take it you’ve tried a good quality torx bit, sometimes tightening first helps. I’d probably drill the heads off, what’s left should easily unscrew once you lift of the coil pack. I’d collect the swarf with a vacuum cleaner whilst drilling rather than risk it dropping down by the plugs.

Before you do all that a quick clean of the MAF wont do any harm, you might be surprised by the results.  Clean it with carb cleaner.  BUT dont touch the centre of it with anything other than carb cleaner.  It'll take you ten mins.  See the section on the MAF if you're in any doubt.

Try cutting slots in the  Coilpack Torx boltheads  with a hacksaw  then  use  a  big rubber handled  ( plenty of grip  Tongue )   flat  bladed  screwdriver.

Worked for me.
