Rev Counter Problems

Hello there,

I am new to this website and apologies for getting straight to the point, but my dad owns a 1994 Ford Granada 2.9i Ghia, V6 with automatic trasmission.  The car has covered 168000 miles and is completely standard.

The problem is has is with the Rev Counter, as the needle sits below the zero mark and when "revving" or driving, the needle climbs anti-clockwise and starts at 7000rpm and ends at 3000rpm.  Sometimes if you rev it hard, the needle goes back to zero and works fine for a few minutes until the same fault occurs.

Someone has suggested it's the +/- connections on the 12v Ignition Coil, but have pulled these off and they are clean with no problems.

Does anyone know what could be the problem as I think it is an electric Rev counter rather than a mechanic counter.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Any help would be apreciated.

I apologise that the model in question is the model before the one on the website homepage, but just needed advice.

Regards

Not sure, but the rev counter may well work from the alternator....so if the alternator has a blown diode, then this could be the reason  Smiley
