No psssshht on opening petrol cap and strong smell of petrol from rear of car which gets inside. Oh no, whats that all about? My mechanic in Leighton Buzzard loves me! I'll need to give him some pointers if anyone can help with this. Thanks.

Get underneath and check for visible signs of leaks especially on the pipes to and from the tank. getting to the sender unit requires dropping the tank.

The usual place is the seal around the sender unit on the top of the tank, unless the tank itself is leaking. Go to THIS page and select the Tank and fuel filter links.

I had the same problem. Only smelt of petrol when tank was full though. Brought a new tank but on dropping the old one the sender unit wasn't tightend up fully. (You could see the staining on the tank where it had seeped out) There is obviously a special tool for tightening but we managed with a cold chislel and a hammer to tap it home fully.
