Reverse-Full Left Lock=Klunking noise

Hi Scorpio"s--New to this site,cos just bought this beautiful Aubergine beast  Wondering if anyone has had this,or knows what it is:If I am reversing and go to full left lock,get this ominous klunking(first time it happened,thought I"d hit something!)Other than that car runs beautiful,steering is perfect--Oh,and it doesn"t happen every time.
Only other problem is thedash resetting to zero when starting,and display going to metric-Got a new alternator and it cured it for "bout a week,but then came back-I seefrom these forums is a common problem,and must be battery? Ifound a way around it,by making sure radio,fansswitched off before cranking,and even letting warning lights go off before starting and it works every time.
Still got a month"s warranty on the car,as only had it 2 months,--but love it.
One thing more,getting 21 mpg with Shell V-power(Urban),and driving aconomically,but have a job to get 19mpg with supermarket petrol-Interesting?
By the way-80,000 on the clock,and was it one of the last off the line?-first registered August "98.

You need to get someone to listen to the clunking very carefully from outside the car when reversing. . The needles resetting is a battery problem and will only get worse as time goes by. Suggest, quoting this forum, and getting your monies worth out of your warranty you need a BIG battery for the scorpio regarless of model . 21 average is quite good see what you get on a good run on Mway should be in the high 20's or even low 30's depending on YOUR driving style . details on themain site

Welcome to the site 
A heavy clunk on full lock could be the wishbone ball joint  ....does it only do it in reverse or does it do it when you pull forward at full lock as well ?

Thanx,Snoops,tried that -but woudn"t do itwhen someone listening(umm,murphys law).And no,Jonny,smooth as silk on forward.Anyway ,get it checked before warranty runs out.Let you know what it was when I find out-and thanx for quick response guys
