Horrible squeal

Hi there I have a squeal comming from the passanger side of the car. I have recentley changed the rear brake pads but I sprayed copper grease on the back of the pads so I have ruled that out. I have also had the rear wheels up in the air and have shook the wheels, there is no play in the hub so I think it might not be the bearings. any other ideas

Under what circumstances do you get the squeal?
Is it only under braking, or other times?
More when you are turning?
Is your car a manual or an auto?
Have you ruled out slipping belts?
A bit more detail about please.

It could still be a wheel bearing even if no movement is detected. If the bearing has dried out then it won't necassarily move, & if it is sqealing loudly then this could indicate that total failure of the bearing may not be too far down the road

Sorry about late reply. I have actually been from hastings to Gatwick and on the way back to Hastings the noise seems to have disappeared. The car is an auto 2.9 12v N reg. I did a rear wheel bearing on a scorpio a while ago and i had a problem with the bearing track had stuck to the stub axle so I ended up getting a new stub axle. The noise is comming from passanger rear. If I look at the bearing and it has had it, then how do I get the bearing inner track off the stub axle?
i forgot to mention it makes a noise under normal driving but it stops when you apply the brakes

You can with care knock it off using a small cold chisel through the access holes in the stub axle. Take your time swap from side to side and gentle taps NOT Big thumps ussually work better , just make sure yu don't damage the axle itself.. I did mine like that some time ago . Soak it for a while in WD 40 or Duck Oil.
I still have a used stub axle and if you require it, make me an offer I can send/post pictures, its in good condition, used but not new!
Also a brand new wafer nut for the axle

Hi Simon I had this same problem for Quite a long time after i had changed the pads. i tried everything to stop it i fitted some more pads and discs (mintex) which made no difference new bearing when the old one was ok and stripped down and greased the caliper many times which made the noise disappear for a while but then it would return this was a sqeak like vibration noise very loud. I finally put the noise down to play in the sliding pins on the caliper bracket causing the caliper to vibrate and this is why it also stopped when braking. I have recently fitted a new caliper bracket at £71.00 odd from ford parts uk and this has now stopped it although only time will tell I would try greasing the sliding pins to see if this makes any difference,best of luck malcolm

In the past I have suffered an annoying squeak from the rear hubs which oddly enough was due to the dryness of the hub nut.It is a simple matter to remove the nut,you need not necessarily jack the car up,put a dose of copper grease on the hub face and in the end of the splines and tighten up 200 lb/ft.

Hi everyone. I changed wheel bearings, packed hub full of grease. Greased brake sliding pins and copper greased the hub nut. I don't have a torque wrench that does lb/ft so i tightened up to 270nm hopefully that will do it. Thanks again, Simon

Simon. According to my conversion chart that is the equivalent of 200ft/lbs
so you are ok. Just one thing. Re-torque the nut after a couple of hundred miles as they are known to slacken off.

It is not as continuous but it is back. I was wondering could it be the grease? I used a lithium based multi purpose grease it is sort of beige in colour. Should it be a thick tar type grease sort of black/grey in colour? It is really starting to get on my bristols!
Is there anyone in the Hastings area that could have a listen. Cheers Simon

I wouldn't have thought the grease would matter so soon, but could have a long term effect.
I bought the correct grease with the bearings from FordPartsUK it was green.

I've used Lithium based grease on wheel bearings before & have never had a problem. It has a very high melting point, so is ideal for wheel bearings
If the squealing is back, but it's intermittent, then surely it must be brake related ?  .........possibly the hand brake mechanism in the caliper is seized & the pads are binding on the disc ?.........How does the handbrake feel ?......it should be tight to pull up. If it's a bit loose, then suspect the mechanism in the caliper to be rusted up & seized or the tension spring to be broken or weak

Cheers JC I did think about the brake pads etc so I touched the brake discs after hearing the squeak and I burnt my finger  I haven't re tightened the hub nut since doing the bearings and I have done 300 miles

Simon, JC has mentioned the hanbrake lever on top of the caliper. They frequently seize up particularly on Autos where the handbrake is often ignored. You need to see if there is free movement on either side. You'll need a decent lever and personally I find a 'stilson' the best tool as it will grip the irregular shape of the lever and allow you to test for movement. The lever is held down by a short bolt and if you undo it a couple of turns and then prise the lever up a bit you'll be able to get some WD40 or similar under the lever. The other point is that there is a Kent meet at Badgers Mount on Sunday if you want someone to listen to it and feel like a run out. ( Just off Junct 4 M25).

I would love to attend but I am a chef and Sunday is our bussiest day. I have also noticed that the squeak sounded very loud when I went over a bump. I can't do much until Wednesdsay next week so I will have a look at the handbrake leaver then. The hand brake comes up easy when you apply it and then it bites on the disc ( I assume).

The handbrake does cause the pads to grip the rear discs. The rear piston works on a threaded system so that adjustment is made for pad wear. That is why you cannot just push the pistons back when renewing pads etc. but need a tool to wind them back. Let us know how you get on.
