Grandad.  I have to confess all this is beyond me BUT have you noticed that in your link,if you move the cursor on to the pulley below the large black arrow, a 'pop up' says TDC?. It looks as though it is showing some sort of 'peg' in the block aligning with the left hand notch??.

Hiya. That is what I called the pic tdc it's an internet id of mine.
 
That peg is a static item attached to the block as a reference point to which one turns the engine to a point where there is 'perfect' alignment for tdc [I think for #1 cylinder I'm not sure about this bit] the problem  is that we have three yes three variable notches on our pulley hence the question Why three   Undecided

Well done Grandad ! Cheesy.  The other marks remind me of the days when you used a 'strobe' light to adjust the timing ie: the ignition point was so many degrees before TDC and you twisted the distributor to get it right!!.  Only some of us will remember those days! Grin

The first mark would be ?deg before TDC surely so second mark would be TDC and third one, I don't know... for luck maybe?  Huh
