It STILL misfires

2.0 16v back on the road after a year(don't ask @). The original problem was a slight misfire/hesitation on acceleration, gear changing etc. Felt for all the world like an HT problem-plug or lead. New plugs. No difference. Went into garage. New fuel filter. Couldn't find anything else wrong. No difference New loom(fuel cut-off/ignition). Just back on the road after associated problem. No difference. Picked up 2 coil packs and leads off one in local scrappie for a tenner. Fit them in any combination with old ones -no difference. All the coil packs have what look like tracking marks round the outside but it's a bit hard to believe that they are all faulty AND giving identical symptoms. Now I remember why I fell out with it in the first place! Any suggestions short of booting it into touch again, Chaps? Thanks in anticipation. Pat

Hi Stuart. I'll check the earth but would starter turn over if it was dodgy? Ah, the EDIS unit. Just remind me again what it is and does Thanks, Pat. PS I could of course be barking completely up the wrong tree. Although the symptoms are similar to HT, it could equally be a fuel problem.

EDIS unit is electronic distributerless ignition system, it runs the sparks, more likely to be the wiring rather than the actual module though i'd have thought.

Regarding the earth, make sure the small lead on the battery neg is securly fixed & is making good contact If you think it may be a fuel problem, then could be a faulty fuel pressure regulator or maybe even a faulty (over heating) fuel pump relay, although, from your description it does sound as though it's related to the ignition. Are you sure those coil packs you got for a tenner from the breakers are okay ?....coil packs breaking down are a common problem

Thanks JC. I've just replaced the battery and cleaned up terminals etc so they're good. No, I can't guarantee the coil packs and I am suspicious about what appear to be tracking marks round the casings. However the old ones have got them as well and no matter in what combinations I fit them, there is absolutely no difference in the symptoms. Even if they are all faulty, I would have expected one combination to produce better or worse results. Or is that too simplistic? I did wonder about the throttle sensor because it snatches on gear changing as well(manual box) but looking at it, I don't fancy trying to get at it! If I was keeping it, I'd go for new coil packs but you have to draw the line somewhere and when they are not guaranteed to cure it I've located the EDIS and had the multiplug off and sprayed inside but it looked ok
