hello.. I have detected a water leak from what i think is the thermostat housing area..its connected to what looks like the inlet manifold..i may be very wrong with my description as not as knowledgeable as you guys..rang ford and quoted me 300 for the part..is this right and is there a leakable part there it def has discoloured water stain there..my mechanic says the whole manifold will need to come off and it looks one piece ..

any help to clarify would be appreciated gents..

Your description is correct, it’s more than likely cracked.
A new one is the sensible option if you’re prepared to pay that much for a lump of plastic.
You’ll probably get a cheaper quote from  http://www.fordpartsuk.com/

Second hand ones are likely to have the same problem & tend to be over priced.

Some people have fitted the complete inlet tract & manifold from the 16v 2.0l as it’s aluminium.
If you look through Jonnycab’s posts you’ll see some repairs he’s done & work he’s done on a Galaxy manifold to adapt it.

Mine's been weeping slightly for the past couple of years, but it’s getting worse, trouble is if they let go suddenly & overheat it can do a lot of damage – cracked head or worse.

If you Email fordpartsuk with your VIN & registration they usually email back to you quite quickly.

You may be lucky & it's just a gasket.
Smashed head is worse case, but it's as well to know the risks, like I say mine's been like it for 2 nearer 3  years now (maybe longer was like it when I bought the car).

Yes manifold off job.

No worries Grin they always go for more than I'm prepared to pay - I'll just have to get on with the one I'm adapting.

This is where my stat housing is leaking, the horizontal black line within the red oval is coolant.

You could try patching it up with 'Quick Steel'. I did this a few months back on mine & it's still holding strong.

The trick is to patch it both on the inside & outside. You'll have to drain the cooling system & then roughen up the surfaces & make sure they are really clean before applying the quick steel. But if done properly, then it should fix the leak  Smiley

Hi jc
Thanks for the tips, but being a cheapskate I went for the use what I had in the shed repair (only temporary of course Smiley)

I put the system into negative pressure to stop it weeping.

Then roughed it up with some glass paper, wiped it down with cellulose thinner and slapped on a good dollop of glass reinforced filler (you can see how deep it is as it's level to the boss where the stat goes in). It seems to be coping with the heat at the moment, but I expect it’ll drop off eventually – but it is only temporary Smiley

Hi Mike

The Vacuum cleaner came through it unscathed Grin (not that I have any other use for it).
I built up a collar about 10mm from the end of the hose out of tape to act as a seal, it pulls in to seal itself once it’s on. It needs to be reasonably airtight at the tank otherwise it can skim coolant of the surface & depending on the design of cleaner you need to let a bit of air in further down otherwise the motor can overheat (my other vac was cooling down out of shot Wink). I can get the pressure down enough that the top hose is just starting to collapse – don’t think it’s quite enough to pull out air locks though.

Did you have to empty the bag often ?....or did it take the full 7.5 litres ?.... ROFL  ROFL

Just kidding  Wink....It sounds like a pretty ingenious idea, but I don't think I'll try it, I'd probably end up with a vac full of water  Wink

Here's a pic of mine repaired with Quick Steel  Smiley......also the brown stuff around the matrix outlet is 'JB Weld' (just as good). This was an earlier repair I did when the brass pipe came loose  Smiley

ROFL ROFL
Surprisingly no problem at all as long as the coolant level is normal & the vacuum pipe’s in place before you turn it on. I used the bit of clear hose (pulled out of a skip) so I could see if anything went up the pipe.
Could be exiting if you had a hose off letting air in.
Best bet would be a wet vac.
