fuel tank leak when full

tank leaks when full.....I can solve by leaving fuel cap loose for a while so fuel doesnt expand....after 30 miles or so everything ok so assume has dropped below sender seal

is it a real risk do you think ? is it worth hassle to drop tank assume seal around sender leaking or similar...how can you tell when tank is empty where leak is can you pressurise with air etc

just dont want to do what seems like a really big task if i have a simple work around

To get to the fuel sender/pump unit you have to drop the tak completely. Apparently not a hard job but you need reasonable height to gain access to it .
I am quite sure others who have done this job or similar will give you advice

pedropedro.
These tanks eventually rust around the filler area near the top, seldom at the bottom. The answer is not fill it.A new tank is £130 from a panel dealer,or there are some on ebay about £90.I have one of those here but it is actually for a Granada 3 precat, even though his picture shows a Scorp one.I am hoping to hear from him about this. There are internal sealants available that you slosh around in the empty tank, but of course this necessitates removing it anyway.

Hi Pedro,
Are you sure its leakinf from around the sender?
Mine failed at the tank end of the filler tube.
I repaired it with tank repair putty there are various brands available and the mot guy was happy with the repair.
I also managed to get at it without removing the tank as I recall I just removed the wheel.

pedropedro.
I have used "Petropatch" as a short term bodge,it,s a sort of bandage that you impregnate with gunge, then stick it on,any motor shop will have it.The snag with rusting tanks is that pin holes appear elsewhere.

Mines doing exactly the same but it's deffinately leaking from the level sender mounting.

I just fill it up to 3/4 but still get the odd wiff of petrol when walking round the back of the car?

How easy is it to remove the sender and fit it to a new tank?  Do you need a new seal?  I know it's a pig of a job in on my Westfield - so much so that tanks from the factory always come pre-installed with a sender!

not sure how to identify 100% where leak is..its spewing from top of tank but when its drying out the trail seems to point towards filler
i guess i can get to filler via wheel arch and see if thats clean..if it is ..then its the sender seal

my remedy has been to fill almost to top and not lock down fuel cap so it doesnt pressurise ...that seems to have got around the problem but not ideal

how did you confirm it was leaking from sender area?

Sender on most Fords isn't hard to remove, usually a locking ring with 3 or 5 tabs on which you need special tool to remove/install (aka flat bladed screwdriver and mallet)...the gasket is just a flat rubber ring.

You need to drop the tank to remove it though.

Pedropedro.
If you do need to take your pump/sender unit out,you can use two lusty screwdrivers crossed like swords, put em on opposite tangs and turn the lock plate off.
