Small Electrical problem - Any ideas?

'98 24v Cosworth.

Was fiddling about with gearlever, as the metal 'stop' bar had dropped out and when I next turned ignition on the heater blower came although switch was Off, and cannot now be turned off.
No digits are displayed on the Temp controls.
Speedo and Rev counter dials spun around.
Computer info has reset to Km rather than miles.
Clock stopped working,
and Interior lights dont work.......
Everything else is fine.

I've 'turned it on and off again' but still the same.

I'm suspecting a wiring short somewhere but if anybody else has had this problem or can direct me to a fuse or relay to look at ...... that would be handy  Roll Eyes

Usually indicates a complete power failure, hence the resets to metric factory settings.

Does car start or just click? May be a coincidental battery failure, PRND switch fault or in my case it turned out to be a little bit of copper corrosion in fusebox on passenger/battery side.

Check the relays one by one looking for corrosion.

Let us know what happens.

I guess you have a battery cover?

Good luck Geoff

Thanks for the quick response Geoff.

You may have nailed it.
The care runs fine (it just got me 60 miles home after the problem) and everything else is working ok.

But if by the PRND switch you mean the bar activated switch that beeps if you open the door when not in Park - then I've just checked, and that's not working now.
I had the plastic 'gate' part holding that switch off to clean rubbish from under the gear lever, so may have disturbed the wiring to itHuh?

Hopefully if its just dodgy / broken wiring, will the other things return to normal - or would it have caused other electrical damage?
Cheers

As far as the internal lights are concerned check fuse 36 power saver in the auxiliary fuse box - wouldn't have thought it would cause all the other problems though – check through the other fuses.

Problem solved.

Turned out to be Fuse #17 'Electronics' (great detailed description) Smiley

So for future Ref  Fuse 17 controls:

Heater Blower Switch (remains ON)
Heater controls
Interior Lights
PRND Switch (ie Not in Park beeper)
Clock
and makes the Computer Reset everytime you Turn ignition on.

Cheers for the swift advice everybody.
