Auto box swap...

Bought my Ultima with a gearbox problem.. it drives, but is quite clunky going from 1st to 2nd and back.. other gears not so bad, but not as smooth as I'd like...  gearbox oil is black and bitty (which isn't good, right?)..

I got a 2nd hand box, so was just wondering how long it would usually take a 1st timer to change one, and if anybody had any tips on getting it done right?

Oh - also wondered if my mpg was about right.. town only, getting about 23 mpg? It's the 2.0l 16v..

Thanks all!

Have you cleaned the MAF - can have a big effect on the box.
Details here:

Damage to this loom can affect the changes:

Correct - black and bitty ATF is not good. What sort of mileage has your car done ?
MPG figure sounds about right if you are doing mainly town driving.

Gearbox is quite heavy - recommend you enlist someone to assist !
You will need ramps and axle stands.
I would allow a day to do the swap, taking it easy and factoring in a few tea breaks.

It's got 102k on the clock, which I think is accurate.. I'll check out that MAF cleaning, as I have a few days off work now as well.. thanks for the tip Smiley

I have the same problem on my -95 cossy. Its done 10 000 km (not sure how much in mileage it is but it's not much).
I have change the oil, cleaned the MAF and tested my other MAF from cossy nr 2. It's the gear 1 to 2 that is clunky but only until the engine temperature is at normal temp. After that I have no problem.
The engine is a bit unstable on idle when its cold but works perfect when at normal temperature.

Question here, Does the fully electronic gearbox still use vaccum on first and second gears? Can it be a faulty vaccumpipe doing this problem?
