hiya lads
got a problem, with my 2.3 manual ultima.when on the road and coming up to stop at lights etc.i depress the clutch and the revs shoot to 2000 then drops suddenly after a few secs to below 850 then it wont settle making the engine flutter.a small rev of the engine settles the engine to steady tickover.even when i drive along in third gear with the foot of the accelerator the car still drives at about 15mph.it seems and feels like the car is driving with the choke out.in these fuel conscious days i would like to sort the problem out with your help.has the car got some type of stepper motor or is it the iacv or maybe something else.
thank you

hi there

sound like the idle control valve need a clean. take it off (2 x 8 or 10mm bolts; watch the paper gasket). give it a good clean with carb cleaner.

dry it off, then add a couple of drops of light oil (3 in 1) to the ram and work it in using a small flat screwdriver.

give that a go. usually does the trick, but sometimes replacement is the only answer.

That's strange.....last time I went to FMD to get a new IACV gasket all that showed on their computer was the rubber gasket. He even let me look at the parts page & there was defo no paper gasket listed  Undecided

Can't resist this. The IACV for the 2.3 is 1058383 and the gasket is 7090339.
The IACV for a 2ltr 1063996 and the gasket is 7165249. The cost from Fordparts UK two years ago was £80 when I replaced mine. They initially sent the wrong one which is why I have the invoices with all the details on them. Fords refer to it as  VALVE-AIRBP if that helps. Grin

Before you decide to splash out megabucks on a new IACV, make sure that it is that causing the problem. My wifes Scorp has a similar problem (tickover revs flutter when cold) & the first thing I tried was a spare (working fine) IACV & it didn't sort the problem  Smiley
