Hesitant on pull away

Hi all

I have a '96 2.3 Ultima Auto - all is excellent except if the car has been in drive waiting to pull away - say at a roundabout - on accelearating the engine does not pick up straight away and leaves the car just sluggishly moving - then suddenly it picks up and goes. Very disconcerting especially if making a dash for it.

Any thoughts will be helpful

Is the throttle opening up enough when you floor it ?.....If not then the throttle cable may need adjusting as they can stretch  Smiley

does it seem to be firing on only 3 cylinders untill revs increase? i had this problem and it was one of the ignition modules that fit over 2 of the spark plugs.
, that was faulty.

I think the throttle cable is ok - but will check. You can overcome the proble by staying in neutal and blipping the throttle but it's not always easy and you then tend to go into drive with the revs to high and the resulting 'clonk' in the drive shafts. Not good practice.

Will look to Dianet idea, it could be only firing on 3 cyl as the engine just seems dead for that period until the engine picks up.

Spark plugs that are past their best will make the car pull away very sluggish  Wink

Same spark plugs for the last 70K - never had them out to clean either - off to Halfords to buy a set. Will post the result

Hi Scorpio_Man

I am buying them tomorrow (Monday) and will fit them, weather permitting. Great photo - thanks for the thoughts. After the effort of changing the heater matrix in the summer, I shall buy  the best plugs as you suggest

Result of new spark plugs - problem has gone & car now pulls away without any hesitation. Old plugs were not Platinum but new ones are. I did clean everything whilst doing the work and I would like to thank all of you who replied. Scorpio has 147,000 miles under its belt and now going strong.

Cheesy

A general word of advice when changing spark plugs  Smiley.....

When removing the old plugs, take a good look down the plug holes. If there are carbon deposits & general gunk around the plug seats then try & scrape it out with a long screwdriver etc  Smiley

If the plug seats are clean, then the new plugs will seat nicely & make a nice gas tight seal  Wink
