Hi everyone  
im new on here and hope someone can help
i have read most of topics on here which have solved the problem with no front lights wipers indicators etc and i have also cleaned the MAF but my gears are still not working correctly, i get up to  3000 rpm b4 it changes to 2nd and it only changes when i back of the throttle and also last night it just cut out on me between london and kent 3 times   ended up getting recovered home any ideas what it could be ? 2.3 dohc auto Thanks in advance for any help

Hi I disconected the maf and the gear change seems to be better but still not as should be i also checked box fluid its a light brown color doesent smell burnt and it is on max when warm oh and also after driving about 30 miles the o/d light blinks but resets if i restart the engine

Could be any number of things but I know the loom is susceptible to damage and can cause the problems you are describing.
 
I don't know where you are in the country but it might be worth while getting the car scanned for faults . Quite a few of the  members on her have the facilities to do this and are quite widely dispersed. ASK for help  and give a location of where you are.

Sounds like the exact same problem I had, which I diagnosed to a faulty TPS (throttle position sensor). I presume the 2.3 has one.
 
Pegasus used his OBDII lead to confirm the error code was TPS.
 
In your case, it may just be a dirty connector to the TPS (3 pin connector - somewhere near the end of the accelerator cable on top of engine). Check it, clean it etc.
 
The TPS tells the ECU the position of the accelerator (variable from 5V to 0V) and the ECU then tells the gearbox to change gear... Bad TPS (or bad connection) gear-changes all messed up, or never changes up at all.
