Master Key Mystery!

Evening All!

Hope somebody out there can help with this one:

When I bought my 1996 (P) Cossie Saloon from a Ford main dealer in October 1998 , I was issued with a (Red) Master Key and one other key (Black, with a red insert) - The "Master" key is noticeably 'thinner' than the black key and the salesman made a big thing of keeping the Master key safe and only using the 'black' key, which is what I've been doing all along;

Today, for no particular reason, I tried using the Master key for the first time (yes, I know I should have tried it when I bought the car!) - The key unlocked the Driver's door OK and simultaneously, all the windows opened, together with the Sunroof!! When I put the key in the Ignition lock, it went 'in' OK but could'nt be turned even to position 1, let alone start the car!

If the salesman gave me the wrong Master key, how come it unlocks my car (and opens all the windows)?

If it unlocks the car then that will be the correct key. You can check the cuts on the key yourself but the MOST likely explanation is that the ignition lock has worn and the key has ALSO worn at the same rate. I suggest you get the ignition lock rebuilt .. dead easy DIY job  and is well explained on the main site  Ignition lock rebuild

That's the function of the red master key to code other keys.  Smiley

But he can't turn his switch with it,he would need to rebuild the barrel to match the red key.
