Suffered an immediate loss of power. Engine will not rev or produce sufficient power, idles normal. A mechanic friend has suggested that it could be the flywheel position sensor. When trying to accelerate the car just seems to bog down. Checked all connections and sparkplugs and all seem to be good. I'm open to all suggestions on this one.

hi there

sounds more like the cat has broken up and is blocking the exhaust.

i'm not to familiar with the 8v engine/exhaust, but have a look near the exhaust manifold and see if the (2) rubber pipes for the egr system have blown off.

Got me thinking and just been out the Van, the motor is in a Transit. Started it up and went around to the back and put my hand over the exhaust and there seems to be very little pressure coming out the exhaust, not the usual beating against my hand. The Cat is not rattling though, so it seems plausible that the problem could be in the exhaust. I have an LPG motor but the problems is with both fuels, what is the chances of passing an mot emmisions test with a cat bypass, the motor is healthy mind?
The problem started then actually got progressively worse over 100km and now the van hardly moves.
The EGR on mine has been removed and blanked off.

Actually now when I think about it while the mechanic and I were looking over the motor we did find a small rubber hose which was not attached, which he said was the for the egr actuator but could'nt find where it had come off of so we pushed it on one of the bolts that hold the header tank on Undecided

Actually accepted the first diagnosis Cat failure as gospel but reading my own reply did'nt make myself clear about it. The rest of the exhaust system from cat down is new the old original one was completely rotten, which I'd known from the start and was used as a big lever in the haggling when buying the vehicle.
I can assume the Cat on it is the original and covered about 180,000 Km, The last 13,000 km in 4 months by me, which is fair enough. I've got two other questions.
Can a Cat fail through ranting the motor
Would a failing Cat produce other syptoms before collapsing and choking the exhaust.
Thanks Undecided
