Fault on door locks/alarm etc

Hi All
The car is a Scorpio 95 2.0 DOHC

Thought I'd ask here for advise before spending the few pennies I have left.

For quite a while, the drivers door lock would not open with the black key but could lock it.  Red key could lock and unlock it.  Remote locks and unlocks okay.

Recently though, the drivers door lock has got worse.  The red key now refuses to open the door, remote still okay.  Trouble is that the battery went flat again (through under-use) recently, so the remote wouldn't work either until I charged the battery and reprogrammed the remote.  Remote now okay again.
I managed to get in the car through the passenger side but even that is starting to act up too.

The feeling of the lock on drivers side seems strange, you can feel the locking bit, but the unlocking bit feels as if it is 'missing' (ie, not there).
Now the alarm goes off at any old time (like 2.00am) for no apparent reason.

What I really need to know is what to start with first?
1) Could the drivers door lock barrel be too worn for even the red key? and passenger door going the same way?
2) Could the drivers door central locking switch be  faulty?  even if the remote can still lock and unlock the door from the drivers side??
3) Could the above (2) be responsible for the alarm being triggered at any old time?
4) How could I tell if the black keys are too worn when the locks may be worn too? (without having to replace bothHuh).

I would appreciate some views before throwing the pennies around.

Many thanks
Brad

Hi Brad, any ford key of the same style will lock the Scorpio but only it's original key will open it, sounds like the classic worn lock/key problem to me. As for the alarm going off randomly, I had this problem and it seemed to be the bonnet switch that was at fault. I changed it, cleaned all the connections to no avail and in the end just unplugged it!! At least the alarm doesn't go off anymore  Wink I'd unplug it first and see if it cures the problem.

Cheers Jim

Yep sounds like your black key and door locks are both worn, your red key is likely ok as usually they dont get much use and dont get too worn.

You can get a kit to rebuild the lock barrels.

Alarm is as Jim said, likely to be the bonnet switch.

I'd get it done sharpish, next stage is that you cant open any of the locks then your remote battery dies one cold wet night miles from home.....

Then things start to get complicated Wink

Hi Guys
Many thanks for your replies.  You mention the very thing that really worries me the most, that is being locked out.
I think I will tackle the drivers door first with a repair kit for the lock barrel (not the best weather to be doing fiddly work).
Then I'll see how the black keys work with the new barrels and only renew a balck key if required.
I still seem to think that the drivers door central locking switch is faulty though, it just doesn't feel right.  Is there a simple way of testing the switch?
