Hi all,
My car has an annoying glitch that I would dearly like to sort asap.
Picture the scene, cold morning, birds possibly singing, frost on the windscreen etc etc.
First turn of the key results in a nice strong firing up of the car with a rise to about 1500rpm and all systems operational.
But......
After a few seconds, engine dies.
Second turn of the key results in a chugging start that requires some gas and once started results in an idle speed that causes the needle to jump between 1200 and 200 rpm with the constant threat of dying unless the accelerator is pressed.
If I choose to drive, it accelerates well, changes gear correctly and after a few mins driving we have a steady idle and all seems well but for a slight blip that seems like a misfire.
I initially suspected an ignition problem so changed the plugs and rotor arm and cleaned inside the dizzy cap with some sandpaper but to no avail.
I have read that the fuel pump relay can cause the sudden engine dying but it starts again afterwards (even though lumpy) and continues to run reasonably well after that so I'm thinking I can discount that.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Welcome to the site for the insane,we must be to run Scorps  Re your problem,the first and simplest thing to try is the throttle potentiometer,which is on the end of the throttle shaft at the front of the engine,best to borrow one first because they make a mess of £50 from Henry.I lurk near Peterborough,not far from you if you should pass by.I have five funeral vehicles with 12v engines,so I always keep a spare.If you can find a diagnostic man who has EEC 1V compatible equipment,the pot fault will come up on there.

I work in Huntingdon and one of my colleagues lives in Bretton area of Peebo so maybe he could pick one up?

try the idle control speed valve sensor at the front of the plenuim chamber if it is faulty the revs will rise fall take the plug of the end if there is no differance then its the idle speed control vavle

Yes I could lend you one off a breaker if your mate picks it up from Eye Green.There is an aubergine rear bumper here,not busted but quite scratched,you would need to skim it and get a spray can.There are some 12 spoke rims here as well,but not perfect,though they aren't square !

Mine did the same last year....replaced the TPS...easy job....runs like a dream now.
Try Chris at Autosave in Lancashire...he seems to have most bits in his yard..

Python9, I think I tried that before and the engine cut out, is that usual?
Gozz again, I don't get paid until next friday but pm me what you'd want for the bumper and a wheel and I'll have a think. Also could do with a n/s/r light cluster for a 95 saloon if you would have one.

Agree....same bit...TPS....make sure you re-conect the plug after changing the sensor....mine wouldn't start straight away as in my excitement I forgot to plug in....easy mistake to make. Good luck

yep it wil cut out m8 i had this problem back when i had a mk3 12v and if driven like this the revs go up and down like the car is surging

Jeez Louise, sometimes even I'm astonished at how stupid I can be.
Anybody notice what other car I own as per my sig?
Might be a different shape, colour and year but still has a 12v cologne with a tps begging to be swopped.
So this morning that's exactly what I did and hey presto, great start and no cut out.
Therefore, thanks for the offer Gozz but I don't think I'll need the lend. Still waiting to hear about the bumper and wheel tho.
Thanks to the rest of you guys for your advice.
I'm sure this won't be the last time I need your help tho.
