MOT on Sat - rubbish handbrake

Hey all I have my Scorp Cos booked in for an MOT this Sat and I already know it will fail on the handbrake. It failed last year on the handbrake as well and needed a recon LH rear caliper. Is there anything simple to check Friday afternoon? WD40 on the cable attachment arm? I'm correct in thinking the cable is self adjusting aren't I? Thanks in advance for your time.

The only hope you have is to try WD40 on the actuating arm. You can raise it -slightly- by undoing the bolt which holds it in place. This may allow the fluid to have more effect. Try levering the arm back and forth. I used a stilson wrench as the arm is an odd shape. It did have some effect but the ultimate answer was a replacement caliper. The handbrake is adjusted, as the pads wear, by means of the piston rotating on a thread and this is why the rear pistons need to be wound back, not pushed like the fronts. There is an adjuster for the CABLE under the heat shield in front of the rear axle. It is NOT intended to 'adjust' the handbrake mechanism and will achieve nothing if the levers are seized or the internal parts worn. Have a read of THIS.

As per Simmos post, rear calipers are a known problem area - they seize up and there is little you can do about it - apart from replace. You may be lucky and get some from a breakers. Recon calipers for Scorpio available from http://www.biggred.co.uk/caliperstore2.html#ford £99 per pair for basic finish up to £139 per pair if you want a luxury finish. Good luck eith the MOT

Just got the Scorp back fromm the MOT station and as expected failed on the hand brake (both sides) but that's all - result really Just ordered a set of calipers from bigred - I'd used them for the Westfield - they reconned the Sierra calipers - very happy with the quality of their work Thanks for the advice all.
