Thermostats.

Jads here again. First, if you read details of my Plumbers heater return 'fix' (bodge), I'm delighted to say all is well !  I also replaced the thermostat, which was not closing fully. Has anyone else noticed that over the years, the thermo operating bulb sags, putting the plunger out of alignment and stopping the unit fully closing. I have 6 from Fords and they are all the same !  I think it's because the thermo is mounted on its side, and sags under gravity - were they designed to sit horizontal ??  So perhaps change your thermo every 3/5 years - However - I suggest you buy a genuine Ford unit as I tried 3 different motor factors, and the 'correct' replacement had NO anti airlock ball valve. Given our airlocks problems, I suggest you use the correct item, and a cutaway ensures this vital valve is at the top. Regards, Jads.

Glad you put that one right....I was starting to wonder what a 'mostat' was & why you'd need 3 of them  Grin

Your right about only using a genuine Ford t-stat though, I once bought a pattern one & not only did it not have the ball valve (don't think it even had a hole), it was too big & wouldn't fit in the housing once you got the rubber ring around it  Roll Eyes..... The shop insisted that according to their 'car bible' it was the right one, but took offence when I suggested that their book was wrong  Smiley

I've noticed this thermostat problem and had to change several in the past.

However, worth keeping at least a single old one as a non-closing one makes for a much cooler engine in the summer and they are dead easy to change - well on 2.3 they are anyway!
