Power steering.

Some advice please. I have an intermittant problem with the steering. At walking pace, there is a mild vibration felt through the steering wheel. It's very light and feels perhaps like a seal that is gripping a shaft too tightly. It doesn't happen if you turn the wheel whilst stationary. Only at walking pace, and sometimes going forward and not backwards, and visa versa ! It is generally on right hand lock however. I have no leaks, have checked for play etc, new drive belt fitted,(not FMC)and correct fluid level. I'm not worried, it's just annoying when it happens, anyone any ideas please ? Take care in the snow, regards, Jads.

Have you checked for play in the wishbone balljoints and bushes? Also check the wheels and tyres for damage.

Hi Highlander. There IS slight play in the off side wishbone ball joint. Wheels are tyres are fine, no feathering or odd wear patterns. But I have just bought a pair of new wishbones on eBay, so they will be going on. The '98 2.3 only has 116 K miles. Regards, Jads.

hi there there's an old tsb from ford about replacing a pipe in the power steering system, but i would imagine that's been replaced by now. try turning steering wheel lock to lock a few times on soft ground (or snow ), as there might be air in the system. hth
