rear suspension rattle/clonk over bumps

My rear suspension rattles/clonks, most noticably at low speed, 10-20 mph, over road repairs. Might this be the rear stabilizer link bars?? Replacing the link bars at front, as the advice on this site, quietened the front. If so, how do they come off? Do you just prise them off the radius arm/whishbone and the rear stabiliser bar?? Do you just repace the rubber bushes?? What about the foam/rubberised damper inside the rear coil springs. They are missing the bottom part. Should they be replaced? Can they be replaced without taking out the coils/ 1998 2.3 ultima saloon - 125,000 miles

Yep, the rear links just prise off with a bit of effort & a little vaseline New links come with the rubber bushes already fitted, so just slip 'em back on with a little vaseline again The bump stops (foam dampers inside springs) aren't really replacable with the springs in position, but as long as they don't look too bad & pass an MOT then I wouldn't really worry too much about them Have you checked the shock absorber bolts are tightened properly or possibly the top or bottom shock bushes are past their best Also, although these cause more of a rattle than a clonk, it's worth checking the handbrake cables to make sure they are held down properly, especially where they run through the guide holes either side of the diff. Just a thought.......have you checked the plastic jack holder under the spare wheel ? Hope this helps

It is possible to fit new bump stops with a bit of soapy water and the use of delicate and dextrous digit manipulation. But as Johnnycab says they ain't a MOT concern and hardly worth the effort of replacement. I had an annoying rear end rattle for a few days till I discovered a big stone rattling about trapped by the rear trailing arm coil spring.

| Should there be something directly under the bump stoppers taking the hit other than a thin metal plate (with some small screwholes in it)?

Thanks Jonnycab. One problem was the nearside brake cable not even in the clips on the wishbone. Clipped it in and got a rattle, so have weged if firmly. Maybe an irritation solved.
