Autobox problem

Just went to go out in the car, started it, went to put it in D & nothing The autobox seems to be stuck in P & the gearstick feels as though it's not attached to anything. Would I be right in thinking that it may have come loose from the selector ? Never had this problem before, so hopefully someone can advise

Thanks for that Andy, I did call the AA & they've just been round. The guy looked underneath & says that the linkage rod isn't connected, looks like there should be some kind of clip holding it on. He managed to manually move the selector to N so we could push the car the 50 yards from up the road (where it's normally parked) into the wifes parking space outside the house. I've not had a look at it yet & won't have the chance today, but will get under it tomorrow. Don't suppose you know what the clip looks like that he is talking about & what part it is on the link you posted ?

Jon, It is a known fault and it could be the actual 'lever' itself. Sometimes they seize up and snap or distort thus affecting the gear selection. Good luck, Mike.

JC. Had the problem two or three times on the funereal vehicles, luckily not whilst actually engaged on the job ! It has always happened just like you say, either when attempting to start off,or manoeuvering in the yard. The clip just looses its springiness and falls on to the heat shield,I usually keep a couple in stock. GOZZ.

Thanks Gozz...if it is the clip in question, then are they a Ford part only, or are they just a common clip available from a local motor factors ?

JC, Seen it loadsa times, if u cant get one a thin washer and normal circlip to fit the shaft will get you going and is a lasting repair. Most factors keep assorted circlips which will fit the groove. HTH Regards Dave

JC. I use Ford clips, they even stock em you slide one side of the clip up the slot on the rod and the other side of it has a hole that clicks over the end of it,but they eventually get weak and slide off. GOZZ

One thing is bothering me now ..... The AA guy saw what was wrong & manually (from underneath) slipped the selector out of P & into N so we could push it. Now I've had a good look at it & fixed it, I'm wondering why the AA guy couldn't fix it ....all he had to do was slide the rod end back over the shaft & it would have been drivable, he could have even fitted a new clip (from his assortment of spares in the van) to stop it coming off again.....Once I jacked the car up & had a look, it literally took about 2 minutes to slip the rod back onto shaft & fit a new clip Why did I ring the AA in the first place ?....for starters, it was parked on the road & it was raining . I have a limited knowledge of autoboxes, so didn't really know what to look for if I had got underneath (with my legs sticking out into the road). I'd just had a shower & didn't feel like getting dirty again & had to pick my litt'lun up from school in a couple of hours.....& I thought I'd get my money's worth from the AA, as I hadn't called them out for nearly 2 years Have to admit though, the AA guy was here within 45 mins & diagnosed the problem as soon as he crawled under the car.....but it still beggars belief why he chose to move the selector to N rather than simply re-attach the rod

JC. To have put the rod back on, the obvious thing,is probably against Health and Safety regulations as issued to AA operatives under anti litigation rules GOZZ.
