Hi Just been for a Re-Gas only to be informed that the compressor is not cutting in as it should and that a replacement is needed (2.3 1997 Saloon) My questions are. Can they be serviced and how, If I source a working used one, what is the procedure for taking old one off and replacing and lastly if I am unable to source a used one how much would I expect to pay for new one. Your input would be very much appreciated. kenboy

I have a spare one in the shed. It came to me with a load of other 2.3 Ultima spares and I was assured it was in GWO when removed. You will need an A/C guy to remove the gas before anyone works on it but I also think you have to be certified now to work on A/C systems

Is it the clutch not working or the signal to switch it on? They CAN be serviced but you'll pick up a second hand one fairly cheaply, in fact I may even have one for a few beer tokens I think a new one from memory is close to the £200 mark! If your system has gas in it then the procedure is to let the aircon guy replace it, its only a few bolts and a multiplug, you cannot legally release the gas into the atmosphere

hi there have you checked if any fuse is blown in both fuse boxes? has the multi-plug fell off the bottom on the compressor (happened to mine a few weeks back. kwik-fit were very nice in gassing mine back up for nothing as it didn't beat they're 10% promise! when i had a look at the system, i found all that was wrong was the multi-plug). anyway, to change the pump you need the gas removed again. it's easy enough to change (4 or 6 big bolts), but is very heavy. you need to do it from underneath and tie the pump up to take the strain. I've got a 2nd hand one here which i was told was fine, but I've have it for a few years now so couldn't give a guarantee. you can have it for postage cost, but this might be as high as £20 because of the weight. let me know what you want to do. regards andrew

Kenboy. Have you made sure the pressure switch is OK,they are a source of pestilence, the aircon bloke should know though. You can unplug it and bridge the terminals, but see if there is power to the compressor first by testing at the plug. GOZZ.

Hi guys Thanks for the amazing response the only thing I can add is that before I took it for re gas it seemed to be working fine and the only reason i took was that I have never had a regas in all the time I have owned the car (6 Years) I should have left well enough alone, but thats life I was with the guy all the time he carried out a discharge and recharge it was only when he came to check the temperature that realised the pump was not kicking in all that happened when switching on air con button was a clunk, he said the magnates in the pump was doing there job but that the pump has siezed I have to say I have never experienced a clunky noise before and I always left the air con on I can only suggest an unfortunate coincidence or perhaps by re gassing has caused the fault but I am at a loss and can hardly put it down to the air con guy, anyway does this clunk from the compressor suggest that it is realy siezed up and if so, I will be taken up one of the offers in obtaining a compressor The guy said he would charge me 80 plus vat to put another compressor in and that there would be no charge for re-gassing which I guess is not to bad Once I am certain iit is a siezsd pump then this is the road I will go down. Many Thanks Kenboy

if you look at the pump there is a clutch mechanisim that locks the pulley to the pump, with the aircon off the pulley should turn freely with the engine, if the pump is working then the centre of the pulley should also be turning. If your pump has siezed and you turn the aircon on then there should be some fairly exciting squealing noises and smoke coming from the belt as the pulley should not be turning either.

With the engine OFF you should be able to turn the centre, it may be stiff & should get harder to turn fairly quickly as the pressure builds (at least that's how mine is). Maybe the clutch is on the way out & can't cope with the extra load?

Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but is the clutch an integeral part of the compressor and if so is an exchange compressor required if it is indeed the clutch. cannot find an illustration on my Workshop Manual CD? it shows the compressor but no mention of clutch. Kenboy

Very Interesting Tompian, I wonder what the air gap measurement should be on the compressors fitted to these cars, might be worth having a stab at this as I have looked at the clutch it tries to engage fully but fails to do so and as the drive shaft moves freely then it does point to a faulty clutch engagement, quite clearly the pump has not siezed. I live in hope Kenboy

hi there i've got/had the clutch setup instructions in paper format somewhere. if i could find them, i could scan you a copy, but as i've said, it's a bit of a 'mare! and you'll need the pump off the car anyway. hth
