Worrying Autobox problem
« on: Mar 20th, 2009, 1:20pm »

My auto sometimes goes into neutral when i stop. i stopped at traffic lights on a hill and kept foot on brake while leaving it in drive, when i took foot of brake to rev it started rolling back before suddenly thumping into gear and shooting forward. It happened ever so slightly a few days ago but this morning it happened several times. Can anyone give me advice? regards Andy.

Just losing drive? You dont have to reselect D again do you?

Have you checked the oil level?

Cleaned the MAF? http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm

Oil is fine, seems to be drive and reverse, is there a sensor?

It loses drive in both Drive and Reverse?

Did you check the oil using the correct method?

Are you having to reselect D again after it does it?

It does sound like oil starvation though, maybe an oil and filter change would help if the level is ok.

Of course it may just be the box is on the way out, they're all getting a bit long in the tooth now Wink

Update, its just slipping in and out of gear, does it in reverse too. the oil is fine, its a 1996 on 72000m. I thought autoboxes from 90's on could do at least double that. The oil is ok and clear. i mentioned the prob last week on the advice forum, it was under ' right hand heater blowing cold ' . The gears seemed similar to a clutch slip to start with at around 30mph the reved would sharply increase before change completed. I tried the maf clean and noticed a perfect change for a while until it came back worse. The wire that is on longest connectors in maff is still slightly brown and will not shine up but even so i disconnected the sensor and the gear problem remained. Andy.

Hi, i think maf is faulty, but i read on forum somewhere to disconnect it and go for drive, if other sensors ok the ' get home ' thing wont kick in, which it didn't. The point was if the gears changed properly then it is the maf but gears were still going into neutral. Anyways i'm hearing these cars are known for a catalogue of electrical probs? Cry

Wondering if this applys to scorpios,

I'd change the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS), also known as the Manual Lever Position Sensor (MLPS), and also known as the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS.) They are known to fail and cause the exact symptoms you are seeing.

I found this on a usa site, think it was chryslers they were on about?

You say its jumping in and out of gear and going in to neutral

Are you having to reselect the gear to get it to move again??

Perhaps jumping wrong word, i stop at lights, when i take take foot off brake to go it rolls back as if in neutral so i pull hand brake, if i rev too much it will thump into gear and shoot forward, sometimes it will just move slowly like a clutch slipping on manual. Really bad now just slips in and out of gear, seems ok over 40mph but change up is always abnormal sharp rise in revs before complete change. I also tried a drive without maf connected but still same. It's same prob in reverse, 1 and 2, sport and o/v off

You definitely need to get the fault codes read. It could be ony one of a number of faults or several .. from wiring to something as simple as the vss not working correctly .. just trying to guess at it will not help The box itself my also be faulty.. i.e. worn brake bands or a faulty torque converter... most garages these days can read codes as well some of the members on here. BUT without the fault codes you are in the guessing game and THAT can work out very expensive.

I doubt this is electrical. Wink  If you can find a real good auto box man a valve chest change may cure it if they are prepared to try it. (the pressure reg valves suffer on these boxes).  However it could just be a wear issue causing low pressure in the trans.  Maybe replacement / rebuild time. Ive seen loads of them knacked at less miles than yours these particular boxes dont do loadsa miles when compared to say a ZF transmission.
