Ultima 2.3 Auto Gearbox Problem 60K miles

I have a bad 2nd to 3rd shift. Fluid is clean, no burnt smell & up to full level when checked using recommended method. The 2 to 3 change takes place with a surge in RPM (about 500 revs). From cold this change is normal but gets bad as the box warms up. The rest of the changes are normal & O/D works OK. D & R take up normally when selected. Can anyone advise of likely cause - please!

Hello Scorpio-man, Thanks for your amazingly fast response, yes I have replaced the MAF with what looks like a new one from a scrapyard. Mine was spotless too; maybe I'm finding out why the last owner got rid! I've had about seven Granadas/Scorpios Mkll/lll, hatchbacks etc all Auto and never a problem. This my first of this mark (after a long break with Fords) and I love it. I've just got to get it sorted - everything else works.

Hello, I live in the Tyneside area. Not many Scorpios here, mostly down South I think.

exaktaman. Your problem is in the servo which operates that particular clutch, when the oil is cold the poor seal is not so noticeable, when hot it leaks by.You may find that if you give it plenty of toe when third is imminent it will create sufficient pressure not to allow slippage. GOZZ.

Hi gozz, I read your post this morning and tried your suggestion this afternoon. Low and behold it works! I can get a good 2nd to 3rd shift by putting in that extra 'toe' - just as the shift is about to take place. Many, many thanks for your input. Now all I've got to do is get it fixed. What does this entail? I must say I'm very impressed with the interest and knowledge shown by you guys - thanks again.

Hi gozz, Is the seal replacement in the faulty servo a DIY job? I assume it's in the valve body is this correct?

exaktaman. I fear the box may have to come out in order to repair the fault, the seal is not in the valve body. When I had that problem I had another box overhauled and just swopped em over.Have you tried a can of jollop as a slim chance of softening the seal ? it can't do any harm. GOZZ.

It's Gozz's way of saying that you could add some sort of additive to the box. . No doubt he'll be along later to tell you which product !.

Hi Simmo, Thanks for that, now I know I'm stupid! I've only had the car for a few weeks so funds are low for getting major work done but I'm worried that in-the-mean-time I am doing the box more damage by continuing to drive the car. Now to look for some additive - sorry I mean jollop - and fingers crossed.

exaktaman. Yes as Simmo says jollop is produced by various people,Wynn's,STP etc etc under the guise of autotransmission additive,"does this that and the other" ? If you drive the car carefully, anticipating the shift, and ease off as it changes I don't reckon you will damage it further, the worst that can happen is that it will refuse third gear, you wont actually break anything. My auto guru is calling in one night this week,so I will get the gen for you from the horses mouth ! GOZZ.

Hello all, Once again thanks for the advice. On the level - if I catch it just right it sort of saunters through the 2/3 shift - as Gozz says. If going uphill the change takes place quite normally (mostly) I suppose the extra throttle lifts the box pressure just enough as you mentioned previously. I'm looking forward to your guru's opinion and advice. Exaktaman

Hi, my scorpio ultima does exactly the same, but also when cold, if i ease of the throttle a little it changes better. Andy.on Apr 27th, 2009, 9:05am, gozz wrote:exaktaman. exactaman. I was with the auto guru tonight,he confirms that the actuation of that clutch is by it's own internal servo, therefore the box must be stripped to replace the seal, sorry not to have more encouraging news for you GOZZ.

Gozz, Thanks for the gen. I'll just have to wait until my funds have built up enough to get the box rebuilt. Thanks again for your helpful responses, Exaktaman.
