engine fan comes on with climate control

Hi, for about 2 months now as soon as I put on my climate control the engine fan comes on and won't go off. I'm wondering if this is a problem that needs addressing or can be left untreated... Also, sometimes it needs to have water added to the radiator and then it can go ages without needing any, I don't know if this is related or not. Thanks, Shaun

If its both fans running on low speed then thats normal, its what should happen You must have a small leak somewhere, possibly the heater matrix, some of the pipework, coolant tank cap, could be a few things, how much does it use?

I'm sure it never use to make that noise when I first got it, it seems to be the noise my old cars made when they were over heating. I've noticed that the engine seems to get quite hot now, i often don't even get a reading on my temp dial now. it's hard to say how much water it uses...it lost nearly the lot one day and then it took ages to loose a drop again! Then last week driving from Colchester to Bristol and back (in one day) it went from the max to the min.

If you're not getting a reading on the temp guage (dropping into the blue), then the water level is either dropping below the temp sender level so it can't give a reading or the temp guage sender is faulty. If it's the former, then the engine will be getting very hot & the cooling fans will come on at full blast. If the leak is that serious then the only way to cure this problem is to find that leak pronto before any engine damage occurs You'll have to check the whole cooling system for wetness or white residue left by evapouring coolant. Run the engine to see if there is any obvious leak i.e...radiator, water pump etc. On the 2.3, a popular place to have a water leak is around the thermostat housing. Because they are made of plastic (part of the inlet manifold) then after time they tend to split open either on top or underneath. Have a good look around it & feel underneath (engine cold) for any signs of wetness or white residue. Also check the coolant tank for signs of water leaking underneath. These are known to split as well Good luck

from what you said, it sounds to me like it's the temp gage, that describes the problem! will some of that stop leak stuff for the water do the job? i must admit that i'm not keen to spend money on the car because i'm looking for a facelift estate...
