2.0 DOHC EFI Problem

Hi, posting this on your forum as I have a problem with the fueling on my Transit 2.0 DOHC EFI engine. These are fairly rare and info scarce, on searching I keep ending up at this forum and I believe the engine/efi sytem is the same as the Scorpio so I hope you guys can give me some assistance.

Symptoms
Will not start hot or cold without a small squirt of easy start, it then fires up instantly.
At Idle and Rpm < about 3000 runs very rich hot or cold.
With engine hot or cold raising the revs black smoke until 2.5 - 3k Rpm then clears.
With engine hot on releasing the throttal revs can hang at about 2.5 - 3k, unpluging the MAF will allow it to return to idle.
At idle hot or cold unplugging the MAF or cold start valve makes no change.

Checks and replacements.
Have replaced oxygen sensor and fuel filter with new, cold start valve, eng temp sensor and fuel regulator with used from breaker.
Have checked manifold, vacume pipes etc and EGR system for leaks.
Have disconnected EGR,Purge to no effect.
Have cleaned the MAF as per your tutorial.
Have checked presence of spark and injector drive at cranking.
I'm running out options so any assistance would be welcome.
thanks.

Hello and Welcome Smiley

Have you/can you get a diagnostic scan done on it? it could be a few things.

Where are you located? someone may be able to do one for you.

Have you tried http://fordtransit.org/forum/ ?

Have you cleaned inside the throttle body around the butterfly? carb cleaner does it very well

Fuel Pressure regulator makes for difficult starting especially when hot . but as advised suggest scan and see what that throws up ....symptoms of the revs hanging are the same as sticking faulty IACV  which if the same os on the 2.3 will need cleaning and lubricating.

Do they have a MAP sensor(manifold actual pressure),these can be a source of overfuelling, but the engine will usually start after a fashion.

Thanks for the replies.
Don't know if it has a MAP sensor at least I haven't found one during checking things, yes my first guess was the fuel regulator but to get two duff ones seems unlikely. What puzzles me is the non starting points to lack of fuel yet it runs rich when started!
Have changed the IACV, checked before fitting the pintle was free but the valve seems to have no effect, as I said you can unplug it hot or cold to no effect on idle.

Hi, just to update, problem was faulty TPS. Did a diagnostic scan but no errors were reported except could see that throttal position never went below 1.7v. On checking the TPS found that the resistance on the first third of movement was constant. This would explain the richness. Changed unit and starts hot or cold  and runs Ok.
