I am a semi retired auto box specialist.
I agree wiv Gozz, and FWIW the clutch that engages 3rd i.e. the Direct Clutch is also applied in Reverse hence the Reverse issues you have.
Not trying to be a party pooper, but I would not advise you to undertake a rebuild yourself on these transmissions. There are too many possible pitfalls and plenty of specialist tools needed that you wont have access to. I fear your efforts would be in vain and the money spent on parts would be wasted.
