cossie drinking like a horse

Hi everybody. right i thourght i had sorted the cooling prob out on my cossie but i haven't the car did a 310 mile journey from home to harwich with no probs kept at a steady 60-70 mph all the way with one stop. outside temp was 14 deg C , no loss of power or any other signs of over heating. on the way down the temp gauge was bouncing around but never going above half the faster i drove to cooler the temp gauge showed, pressed and held the trip reset and scrolled till i got to coolant temp this to was going from 80(lowest) up to 218(highest) changing every second. stopped over night at a travel lodge came to the car the next morning and the expansion tank is just below min and the warning light is on, topped up and did the 30 miles to the port and 30 miles ish to the camp site. after 6 hrs on the ferry. adv fuel consumption was 29.3mpg for a fully loaded car and 4 passengers.(half a tank) did not drive the car while on hols come to drive home and the expansion tank is low again warning light is on, parked in the same place for the whole 10 days, there was no sign of a leak on the floor, weather was hot and sunny no rain at all there was no staining of the white gravel from coolant. topped up and drove to the ferry port in 26deg c no signs of over heating, 6 hrs on the ferry and drove home again around 18 deg c outside,3 1/2 hour journey no stops 65 all the way home. Again no signs of over heating but the temp gauge was all over the place but again never going above half, check the oil the next day and it is fine, slippy and a good colour no bits in it and no mayo on the filler cap, undid the sump plug and oil came out,so no water in the sump. the heater is hit and miss hot for the first 5 mins in the morning then hot and cold as you drive around but this could be the climate control. i have had the car in the garage and left it parked on a white sheet over night the sheet is clean in the morning no water, oil or petrol. the car has had a new rad , water pump ,heater matrix expansion bottle and level sensor. I put 2.5ltrs of coolant in it on hols and about the same in the 2 weeks before i went away wife put 2 lts in yester day after 100 mile round trip. SO my question to the brain boxes on here is what could be wrong with my cossie? where should i start? I would very much like to get it fixed so i can use the 200+ horses under the bonnet fully many thanks gareth

There is another place coolant can go, and it's not a pretty thought. Check your auto box dipstick and make sure th fluid is red or bright pink or better yet drop the sump off the box.

I've got another five options.. A) Is the cooling system under pressure? the valve in the tank lid can stick open and you'd be losing vapour while running but not liquid. (happened to me) you'd only notice it if you checked at the overflow pipe. B) Check the passenger side footwell in case its leaking round or from the matrix C) Rear core plug in the engine leaking into the bellhousing D) slow leak between the heads evaporating while running E) Head gasket I'm going for A oops Sorry Wojtekor forgot about you... 6) Fusebox

| can't find a connection between the problem and the fuseboxes this time, but it's fuseboxes anyway unfortunately head gasket was my first thought but didn't want to scare ya Gareth... just hope that Stuart is right...

Thanks lads I was thinking head gasket as well but i can't find any signs of water in the oil or heads no dryed coolant around the gaskets . I so hope it's not in the gear box i would cry, where is the core plug what does it look like? the glove box/ footwell is dry i looked there, where is the heater matrix and how do i get to it? Highlander after driving the car it was drawing a vaccum so when i undid the expansion tank cap there was a huge hiss and the tank re filled not messed with it for a week now. I have a new cap so will fit it and see where we go from there. Woj cleaned the drain holes out for the fuse box a few weeks ago;D i have taped a small bottle to the over flow pipe we will see what it collects. thanks again gaz

right been out to the car to work through the list above Checked the auto box dip stick the oil is slippy and a clear light brown colour and smells of oil no foam or mayo it was serviced last yr the spring on both expansion tank caps is ok pushed them with a screwdriver. checked the glove box/foot well again and is dry. one of the washers with the rubber seal which secures the head has some slight blue depostis round it but that is it will look in more detail at the weekend. thanks gaz

Head gasket doesnt necessarily have to leak water into the oil, you could have a leak between the water channel and the cylinder so your water would be exiting through the exhaust. The rear core plug would need the gearbox removed to get at it, just a round disc pressed into the block, you can slacken the box to engine at the bottom and see if theres any water coming out? Coolant cap sounds ok.. If its not the core plug its looking like a head gasket now

I would also be looking at the water pump gland. That can leak small amounts of water without it being very noticeable... Radiator even though it has had a new one! Does sound as though you have air/vapour in the system if the gauge and the eec readings are jumping about.

we force filled the system as well to get rid of air pockets will the air work its way round the system or does it need bleeding. gaz

update gents just been to get fuel 5 mile round trip looked in my bottle taped to the expansion tank over flow and there is some coolant in there about a table spoon. undid the expansion tank lid and it has drawn a vaccum same as before and the tank filled well over max once the vaccum had gone. gaz

Hi Gaz, what do you mean by its drawn a vaccum then filling? Is air being pulled INTO the sytem when you open it? Is it you filling it over max or does the water level rise over the max on its own? You can take the cap apart and clean the rubber on the valve, I turned by rubber around on mine but be aware it has a really strong spring and will go off like a gun when you remove it

yes the level is around the min mark when i unscrew the cap it lets air in and then the level rises to well over the max level but when it cools it is back to normal or may be low enough to bring the warning light on gaz

Are you sure air is going in? Sounds more like you’re letting pressure out & air/steam trapped in the block expands and forces coolant into the expansion tank.

Just because the hoses are hot doesn't mean air isn't trapped in the block or a head. If there was a vacuum the hoses would be softer than normal, they should be slightly harder & under pressure. How could there be a vacuum?

that has me stumped to and i fully agree it should be under pressure. i have checked the expansion bottle lid with the tissue test and it is pulled to the lid not pushed away i will try the soapy water test next time i unscrew it. thanks gaz

hi there i'd try a new cap. about £15 from ford. the cap has a major role to play in regulation of the cooling system. if coolant is going down the overflow pipe, then the pressure in the system isn't right. my car did all that coolant disappearing/re-appearing in the header tank when the head/head gasket went, but i think the cap was a bit faulty at the same time. are you getting any strange noises? v6 can make a noise went the head gasket's blown. can sometimes some like a blowing exhaust gasket. change the cap and see what happens. do it know before the symptoms get worse. maybe even get a sniffer test done. don't rely on the temp gauge. i drove 250 miles back up from leeds at 70/90 mph with a cracked head and the gauge stayed in the middle and didn't move! hth

I'd agree a new cap is worth a try. I’ve only looked at a 2.3 cap so can’t say if this applies to a cossie one. When I took it apart there was a valve to let air in (in the event of a vacuum when it cools down). The double O ring arrangement means it should vent down the overflow pipe when you start to unscrew it not around the cap.
