Transmission/ Auotbox issue

I know this forum is for the Scorpio,. However, I was given this website from a member from another site who said you all have a lot of expertise with the autobox. I have a 1995 Ford Probe GT 2.5 V6 automatic. Just bought it for my wife she has always wanted one. Anyway, when you put it in drive it shifts fine from 1st to 2nd, then just reeves up no 3rd or overdrive. Even if I try to manually shift that is all I get. Is this the tranny, a solenoid, sensor..etc.? Someone on line said it sounds like the auto box. Does that sound right? If so, is the auto box and the tranny the same thing? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I have searched on line for a week and come up with nothing. I am being deployed in 3 days and would like to get this taken care of before I go.
I will stay online all day in hopes to get a reply if it is the tranny I will replace, I just don't want to go that route if it could be something else.

Also, I did check the fluid it was nice and clean but did a service anyway and nothing in the pan.

Thank you in advance for your help.

hi  there

sounds like it could be a belt slipping or a solenoid.

how is it in reverse? iirc, 3rd and reverse are linked.

where abouts are you? i'd look up auto transmission place near you and get them to look at it.

saves all the guessing. if i remembered correctly about 3rd and reverse, then the 'box needs to come out, but i'm not sure with the probe being front wheel drive and all.

hi there

just looked, you're in Florida! Grin

it's a weird combination. Mazda engine and ford running gear (i think).

not sure what to say. there is a ford probe club in the UK. one of our members is a member of it. i'll try and contact him.

belts are fine. reverse is fine. ford says that the solenoids are built into the valve body. and no luck finding one of those. could it be the tcm since it is separate? is the auto box and the tranny the same thing? also, tried a lot of tranny shops and none will touch this tranny? not sure why...but ford can't even get parts for this car anymore.

hi there

yes, tranny and autobox are the same thing.

in the uk, the probe also came as a mazda mx6. it might have the same set up.

it's give you something else to look for on the net.
